Title: Re: How to play? Post by Valren Arelwynn, XFY CO on Jan 28th, 2005, 9:53am Well the tournament hasn't started yet. As we approach the beginning of the tournament, areas for post will appear and I think it will be largely self evident then, but if not, ask away. It is hard to explain now when you can't see the forums. |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by K`Hare totlh on Jan 28th, 2005, 10:26am Go here: http://www.jord.ca/bfbt/ and read the welcome message and the rules then fill out the application form. Also, please edit your profile so that your name appears as the name of your Bravofleet character that is attending the event. The event starts February 8th but will be active a day or two before that, so check back. Once it begins, forum areas for each day will appear. |

As you can see when you come on the forum there is an area called "General" and under it their are various sections (such as "Questions & Chat" where you are right now). When it comes time for playing the game other areas will appear where you can make IC posts. But, as K'Hare said above, you cannot play unless you register for the tournament by following the above link, filling out an application, etc |

Battle through posting? so is this more like who post the best overall gets the prize? |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by So`l Mackenzie on Jan 31st, 2005, 9:31pm No. A dice roll is made, modifiers are applied, and a winner is determined. Then the judge (K'Hare) sends the results to the participents, and they do a JP of the fight. Posting quality has nothing to do with who wins the tournament, but everything to do with who gets the Best Role Player Award which is really the only one that counts. |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by K`Hare totlh on Jan 31st, 2005, 11:53pm Have you read everything in the rules section? Remember this is the third year so a lot of people know the rules already, but you are right, I need to post another summary. I will do that, but for now, look here: http://www.batlh.com/cgi-bin/betleHIII/YaBB.pl?board=genRules;action=display;num=1105683211 and at the what to do after post in the same section. The basics are this: There will be brackets so you will know who you are fighting beforehand. You can examine their bio. But each fighter has a skill score based on the form you filled out when you entered. Before each match, each fighter will send in how they are fighting for just that match... honorably or dishonorably. This modifies your chance to win. Fighting with great honor is a -2, honorably is -1, neutral is 0, dirty +1 and very dirty +2. Fighting dirty is a bonus but your post, your combat should indicate what you did. Also, the person who accumulates the most honor gets an award. Your fighting stance is added to your skill score. The judges then roll a die to indicate the random element of the combat. That die roll is added to your score. The fighter with the higher total wins. This happens for each combat. It is possible that one fighter cannot win in a match because the scores are so one sided. Again, the point of the tourney is to role play the events. The random element helps push the drama and unexpected things do happen. As big as that is, the characters interact and meet each other outside the ring and that can lead to role playing and drama that is just as fun. |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by xian.tseng on Feb 1st, 2005, 9:33am yes i have read everything in the rules. the url you provided me, the post above, i believe it contains more history about the competition than how it is done. the rules are very simple to me. i am trying to get a full view point how this is executed. maybe you can provide some samples from past competition? lol. maybe this will clear my eyes. and how about some advice for the first-timers? anything about ties? lol. |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by K`Hare totlh on Feb 1st, 2005, 10:35am I will post something like what is above in the rule section before things start. If you want, you can join the KDB mailing list and read what happened last year, but yes, the combat rules are simple. They are weighted toward the high ranking Klingon characters to win, in character. There are small advantages for being Klingon, having rank, being a combat character, etc. There is also a random element. The best way to think of the competition is that its a joint mission with just one or two characters from 10-20 ships. The mission is to simm a weapons competition. In this case, its a Klingon weapon so there is a Klingon bias. Last year's tourney starts around message 701. But this is the post that started the character combats: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Starbase-KDB/message/833 You will need to join the group to read them. Just attempt to join and I will let you in when I see the notice. Last year, much of the conversation about how the competition would happen was done on the BF forums. This year, a lot of people remember from last year, so if you feel a little lost, that is why. Up til now, I have been concentrating on the roster and bios for all the entries. That is done now. I have a few small things to clear up by this afternoon. Once that is done we will make the brackets. Then I can concentrate on posting a little about how the tourney will be run. Keep looking back. Sometime between Sunday and tuesday we will open up the first in character thread, the game will begin, and you can arrive. The first PC match will be a few days later so there is time. Click the banner at the top and have a look at the bios of all the people attending. Every one of those is a PC. If you are still unsure of what to do sunday, IM me or PM me here. |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by xian.tseng on Feb 7th, 2005, 4:01pm Ok, i see my opponent have 8 and i have 6... what should i do? should i go ahead and create a joint post? |
||
Title: Re: How to play? Post by K`Hare totlh on Feb 7th, 2005, 4:39pm Every fighter will win one match against an NPC. So the first thing to do is to think about that post. Also, you need to arrive. That area should open up soon. How did you get here? On a shuttle? Did your ship drop you off? Did you meet up with another ship that has fighters and will be here? Probably too late for that last one. Your post about your arrival and your post for your freebie match may attract other players to your character and so they might walk up to you in the bar later. Right now, worry about those two posts. The first match is a few days away. I will post a tentative schedule late tonight. But note that it wont be exact as the story might go a little fast or slow. I still need to post something about how each match will be run this year. I haven't forgotten, there is just always stuff to do. Hopefully I will get that out tonight. |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by xian.tseng on Feb 7th, 2005, 7:08pm good good... i have the intro step covered... i assume the next step is the competition begins. since i will win one match against an NPC. on the second one i presume it will be an PC? once the winner is determine, a joint post will be created between the winner and loser in accordance to the winner? i hope i am following you really well because i fell like i am getting much more closer. lol. |

Title: Re: How to play? Post by K`Hare totlh on Feb 8th, 2005, 4:47am Sounds like you have the basics. Personally, I like the idea of the loser of the match writing the first draft of each match after the pair in the match talk about it. How you lose can be just as dramatic, if not more, than how you win, and if the loser of each match takes the lead role, then it spreads the work and helps keep the creative juices flowing. But don't let the tourney end when and if you lose. I know that the first year the most fun I had was sitting in the bar at night meeting and socializing, in my own Klingon way, with the other fighters. I remember having a chat with Tauvits after he lost. He was shocked I was so cheerful since I lost the first match. |
