Title: Arrival: USS Saturn
Post by Wade_Duerkes on Feb 7th, 2005, 6:03pm

Rear Admiral Wade Durkis stood staring out the window of his ready room and watched the streams of stars race by the window.  At times in stead of the stars he would see the faint reflection of himself against the blackness of space. He thought he looked older.  This last mission seemed to age him.  It was more of a mental aging then a physical one.

Or maybe his was just plain tired.  The lost of so many of his crew coupled with the importance of his mission had kept him up for the past few nights during their trip to Xavier Fleet Yard. That and the lose of a particular crew member had effected him deeply.

All this had taken away the joy out off his recent promotion to Task Force 9 Executive officer. He worked so hard and long to get to where he was but for the moment he couldn't take any joy in his achievements.  The last letter to a family about to mourn was written. Wade wrote more letters of this kind for this mission then he ever had to write before. The only concellation was the number of lives they saved in the process.  I was a concellation that didn't help at the moment.

Wade pondered all this while he watched the streaming starlines slow down to individual points.  The Saturn had arrived at Xavier.  Repairs would soon start on his battered ship and the Bat'leth Competition waited for Wade. No rest for the wicked.

Bernard: *Taps* Admiral, we've just docked at Xavier.

Durkis:Contact Admiral Neirbo, remind him he is buying the first round of drinks...And I could use one.

Bernard:Aye sir.

Wade knew he couldn't dwell on the past.  There was too much to be done. But there was nothing on the tournament that needed to be tended until tommorrow. So his plan for tonight was to meet with a couple of good friends and basicly...get drunk.

Bernard: Ah Admiral?

Durkis:Go ahead.

Bernard: It was just informed that Admiral Neirbo is no longer the CO of XFY.

Durkis:WHAT!?

Bernard:  You've been requested to report to the new starbase CO's office. A Vice Admiral Valren Arelwynn. He said he would explain.

Durkis: What the...tell the Admiral I'm on my way.

Wade left his ready room and made his way to the Starbase.  The drink would have to wait.

=/\= Bridge, USS Saturn =/\=

James stood on the rear deck of the bridge, and had been for some time. Their last mission had been harsh...not the kind of thing a doctor would expect to be in the middle of.

All of his time on the Saturn, before Admiral Durkis had been calm...quiet. He had sat around shipside and patched up cuts, bruises and contusions. Three ship swaps later and James had decided to leave Commodore Anderson and transferred to Command, back in San Fran.

But it hadn't suited him. Sure, he had a reasonable job at Medical, and an even better one at the Academy..one that had afforded him the time to work on that which he knew best...

But it had grown boring. There wasn't the excitement of being in deep space. He had longed to feel the surge in his feet as a ship jumped to warp, or as a critical patient was brought in. He had missed his home, the Saturn.

When he had learned of his former position open on the Saturn he had jumped at the chance to get off that ball of rock. Sure, it wasn't the same...the crew was nearly all gone and there was a new CO, but it wasn't the men and women, the orders...it was the connection that drew him back. The Saturn was his birthplace of sorts...

He felt that all to familiar slowing that signified the ship had dropped from warp. Not the kind of thing a new recruit would feel, something you just grew to know and feel. James blinked a few times, snapping out of his musings and looked up at the blurring starfield on the display. Xavier Fleet Yards snapped into clear focus, it's size was impressive...

But more than that was the feeling inside. James had been looking forward to returning to Klach D'Kel Brakt. He had liked the station's dark corners and how it had allowed him to blend in...but more than that was the distraction that the combat provided.

All the rage, anger and hatred from this last mission, from watching a crewmember die and not being able to do anything about it, would soon flow into his blade. He only hoped that G'trell would be here. He missed her dropping by sickbay every now and then, but more than that he missed sparring with her. He had nearly bested her. It had seemed so long ago, but it had really only been less than a year.

Had it? Their encounter had seemed like an eternity, all the death, all the mayhem, and there was nothing he could have done about it. The thought haunted him.

The Saturn had docked, James had watched with some disinterest. The old ship was in for some maintenence thanks to Zohar. They had barely made it out...

Bernard: "Admiral, we've just docked at Xavier."

Durkis: "Contact Admiral Neirbo, remind him he is buying the first round of drinks...And I could use one."

Bernard:"Aye sir."

James looked at Bernard. Bernard had entered the tournament as well. It would be interesting if they had to meet in the ring. There was an brief conversation between Bernard and the controller at XFY. Then Bernard passed the message along to a rather shocked Admiral Durkis. So it seemed that Admiral Nierbo wouldn't be around this year...James had met him last year at the tournament...

Bernard:  "You've been requested to report to the new starbase CO's office. A Vice Admiral Valren Arelwynn. He said he would explain."

Durkis: "What the...tell the Admiral I'm on my way."

The doors to the Admiral's ready room hissed open and Durkis made his way across the bridge. James felt closer to him, having survived the incident on Zohar at his side. Sure, James had felt a connection to Commodore Anderson, but this was different. James was literally willing to sacrifice his life for Durkis and he barely knew the man. James decided it was time to change that.

He quickly joined the Admiral aboard the turbolift, before the doors could snap shut.

"Sir, do you mind if I accompany you? There are some things I would like to discuss about this past mission with you..."

He trailed off and waited for the Admiral's reply.

Wade turned to the doctor.  He first reaction was to tell the doctor that he didn't feel like talking about it.  He had more business to deal with now and he didn't feel like having a counseling session with so much to be done.

But Wade caught himslef.  He was slowly starting to get to know Dr. Tal'vur better and better and inside knew that wasn't what he wanted to do.

Durkis: Sorry doctor, I have some business to tend to first.  But, later after I tend to some things we will have a seat and discuss a few things. Deal?

Tal'vur: Yes sir.

Wade left in a hurry and made his way to the starbase.

A.J. just sat at the helm during the trip to XFY.  He realized his brother Shawn's ship the USS Lexington was just there in the past few months so he didn't think he would see it there.  The Saturn arrived at XFY.

A.J. Messaged the admiral that admiral Durkis was on his way.  He realized he had to get ready for the tournament so he went to his quarters.  He packed up a few things he would need, even a brand-spankin new betleH.

While he was packing, he decided to check the list of competitors.  Noticing a lot of Klingons and Romulans in the lineup.  One Romulans name popped up that he didn't expect to see, mostly because that perticular Romulan was from A.J's brother's ship.  He wondered if the Lexington would come to the tournament.  Alot of things crossed his mind but he decided to get a good nap (if there's time) before heading over to XFY.
