Title: A late lunch
Post by K`Hare totlh on Feb 8th, 2005, 7:03pm

K'Hare had spent the previous evening going over tournament details with the new XFY CO and Durkis and spent the morning reviewing the notes his aides had prepared.  Normally, K'Hare wasn't such a stickler for paperwork but this event was important to him and he wanted to insure it went well.  As a judge and a recognized leader of this event, he knew the operation and generation of fleet unity this event created reflected on him.

He knew the same was true of Wade, but if the idea hadn't been so foreign, he would have sworn that valren wasn't particularly interested.  It seemed to the Klingon that valren was only participating because his job required it, because he had inherited the task from Neirbo.  Ridiculous... even a human could see the opportunity this event was.

With the paperwork done, K'Hare sent a message to his old CO, Wolfe and invited him to lunch.  K'Hare had missed him.  He was still more flatheaded than not, but he did have some history with the Empire and he did had an interest.  One of K'Hare's personal challenges was to stoke it.  He also invited his 'civilian' companion to join them if he could.

So, expecting the pair to meet him in a short time he ordered three BloodWines and waited, wondering what they would order when they arrived.

OFF:

<TAG:  T Wolfe & Dan>

T, feel free to bring a guest.  K'Hare didn't invite anyone else because it didn't occur to him.

OOC: My earlier scuffle hasn't been posted yet, I'm waiting on a certain blue person to get back to me with the JP =)

ON

Dan walked along the corridor looking for the room K’Hare he kept rubbing his nose as he walked, you could hardly tell it had been broken now. He still felt a twinge in his ribs with each step, on reflection it had been a little silly of him to leave the medical bay so quickly the doctors hadn’t had time to completely heal his wounds. Still it made him feel human again and it helped him reflect on the stupidity of his drunken actions, speaking to Tauvits that way was just plain dumb especially since he’d never taken the time to find out exactly what had happened on the Thunderchild.

His cheek was throbbing in a way that told Dan he was going to have a rather large bruise appearing on his face before too long. Looking up he saw a couple of Star Fleet Security officers guarding the entrance to the VIP areas, as he approached one of them moved to bar his path. “I’m sorry sir, you can’t enter this is the VIP area”

Dan looked down at his chest trying to work out what the second security guard was looking at, it dawned on him not only was he not in uniform his shirt was spattered with blood still from his earlier broken nose. He chuckled lightly to himself as he dug in to his bags front pocket looking for his PADD, pulling it from the bag he passed it to the security officers. Immediately their demeanour towards him changed they straightened up and stopped staring at him, the first one handed the PADD back smartly as he said “Sorry for the miss understanding sir, would you like an escort to your destination?”

“No thank you, I can find my way from here” Said Dan trying to suppress a smile from forming on his face, perhaps he thought to himself it was time to finish his vacation and get back in to uniform. He’d managed to relax in the past 24 hours since arriving on the IKS Montgomery Scott, relaxing was something he didn’t do enough of. Briefly thoughts of Moira flashed in to his mind; there was an issue he’d have to take care of when he returned to the Reagan for too long he’d pussyfooted around the issue refusing to take charge of his emotions and deal with them once and for all.

Arriving at the room K’Hare pointed him to Dan entered he immediately caught site of K’Hare looking much happier than he had on the Scott, what ever had been bothering his Executive Officer had obviously been resolved. Dan was glad; perhaps finally he could get to know the Klingon a little better.

“K’Hare how goes it?”

K'Hare stood when CO arrived and waved at the bar to have someone bring another drink and pointed at a chair.  "Ad... *ahem* Dan, glad you could join us."  K'Hare looked at the empty table.  "Well, I haven't recieved confirmation that Wolfe can make it, but it is still early."

K'Hare looked closely at the person his position required he protect and die for, if required.  The bruises were not obivous, but someone trained in combat knew how to look for such things.  "You seem to be enjoying yourself."

Fun Dan thought to himself? Yes it’s been fun but at what price? The words of Tauvits cut in to Dan like a betleH through his flesh, Tauvits the disgraced Admiral had just shown more backbone than Taylor ever had before in his life. Even strapping himself in to a Star Fleet Fighter during the dominion war hadn’t been a brave thing for him to do, he’d been living life between his legs at that point in his life. The idea of dying never occurred to him, or more accurately didn’t matter to him.

Now, well now Dan wanted to make his mark on Star Fleet. Since taking over Task Force 86 Taylor had done very little towards making himself known. He’d have to think about changing that and changing it soon, it wouldn’t do to have people remember him as a useless TFCO or worse have people not remember him at all.

“Yes I’ve had some fun” Said Taylor with a sigh “But its not all its cracked up to be, sometimes I wonder if being an Admiral isn’t what I’m cut out for” He took a sip of the bloodwine and swallowed it, he followed that with a bigger mouthful “So K’Hare did you sort your issues out with our host?” Taylor inquired not taking his eyes from his drink.

K"Hare nodded to both comments.  "Yes, the event should run smoothly.  We have prepared in every way that we can."

He took a long drink.

"I understand what you mean about flag rank.  There are a great many days I miss simply having my bI'rel and flying the stars at my whim."  He took a drink and smiled.  "Usually it is the days when I have some form of PADDwork to submit to you."

He took another drink and grinned.  "I miss the days when the enemy was flatheaded and clear... not some mysterious one that attacks from behind for reasons unknown."

K'Hare and Dan both knew it was a joke since in the Klingons entire adult life, the federation and Empire had been allies.

Dan laughed his mood lifted by the words of K’Hare “If only my life was so easy, I’ve got pasty heads on one side, pointy ears on another and still more enemys to deal with from the Gamma Quadrant.”

K'Hare couldn't help replying.  He was glad to see his boss relaxing.  "Be glad of the pointy-ears, if not for them, the pasty heads would have you surrounded."  He laughed and took a drink.

He took a long draught of his drink and appraised his TFXO, K’Hare was certainly a strange one most Klingons wore their house badges with honour yet K’Hare wore none. From his earlier conversations he was beginning to realise why that was, there was defiantly something different about K’Hare. Dan was glad he chose K’Hare for the post of Task Force Executive Officer, the Klingon had been picked over many other candidates including Wade Durkis who had since been promoted to Task Force Executive Officer of Task Force 9 the place where Dan’s career had started.

Dan had the urge to ask K’Hare more about his history but felt now probably wasn’t the best time to open a discussion like that. Instead Taylor chose a different question, an important one in its own right but not one that could lead K’Hare to open his soul to his commanding officer.

“I’m curious K’Hare, where would you suggest a flat head go to find his own betleH?”

ON:

K'Hare considered the question and whether or not the human was still joking.  "It depends on exactly what your question is.  I assume that the most obvious answer, walk up to one of the participants, a 'pasty head', and challenge him for it.  Of course, the price may not be something you wish to pay."

K'Hare took a long drink.  "I assume you want one for practice.  You can get one from any of your holodecks that would be suitable for learning the fighting style.  The quality would not be as good and it would not last as long in battle.  If you like, I can get one from the stores of the Montgomery Scott... a blade that would be given to a cadet."  K'Hare grinned, "But perhaps, if I did that, I should charge you the same 'fee' I charge them."

K'Hare emptied his tankard and signaled for another.  "You could have one commissioned.  We have a fine smith on KDB.  In addition to payment, he would insist on meeting you, on learning of your family history and would expect some stories of how you have enriched the Empire.  The last way would be for you to impress some Klingon with influence or resources.  Most Houses have a supply and often, if a great deed is done in service of the House, a fine weapon would be a gift."

A steward brought a new bloodwine.

"Impress me enough, and I might have one made for you."

Taylor looked at K'Hare and realized he was totally serious.

‘Impress a Klingon?’ he thought to himself as he took another sip of his bloodwine ‘easier said than done’ so far in his life Taylor had done little to enrich the empire, in fact he’d done little to enrich the Federation. He was still convinced he only got command of Task Force 86 to move him away from Task Force 17 before he could ask any questions about how one of Star Fleets best officers turned bad.

“I’m not sure how I could impress you K’Hare, so far I’ve done little in my life to enrich anyone.” He swallowed down the last of his bloodwine savouring the head rush that usually followed ingesting so much alcohol. “My families history would not interest any Klingon smiths either, we’ve mostly been pilots for the last few hundred years, and soldiers before that. The only glorious battles my family has seen was the Dominion War” Taylor wasn’t sure what K’Hare knew of his exploits during the Dominion War, what he and his squadron did wasn’t a matter of public record in actual fact most of what they did wasn’t officially sanctioned.

“I am interested in learning the art of fighting with a betleH, this time next year I hope to be competing here. I’ve seen a few practice matches going on between the fighters, they seem so skilled.”

"Well then, it would seem the best way for you to acquire a weapon of your own would be the same way my students do.  It looks like Wolfe could not make it so if you like, after we eat, would could go practice in one of the arenas.  We have enough time before the welcoming and I am not expected to giv ea speech this time, so I do not need to prepare."

"Let us eat then K'Hare, for a feel I'll need all of my strength to spar with you" Said Taylor smiling as he lifted his freshly refilled cup. "I only hope I don't disappoint you, hand to hand combat has never been my style. Like most pilots I prefer to kill from a far."

"That seems to be a common human trait.  To kill without showing your face to the enemy...  Klingons do not approve.  But everyone has to start somewhere."  He took a long drink.  "Tell me, what hand weapons have you trained with?"

Taylor laughed “That common human trait is integral to a fighter pilots life, to me fair and honourable means all of my guys coming home alive.” He took another drink to wash down the meat and bread he’d just swallowed “Weapons, I’ve had basic Star Fleet Weapons Training. I can handle most pistol and rifle weapons without issue. While I’ve never actually trained with a betleH I was taught to sword fight at the academy.”

Tomas was deep in mediation, since Ro went out shopping and had yet to return from shopping. He never heard the console beep letting him know he had a message waiting.

Luckily, it wasn't entirely too long before his session was over. He got up, ordered a coffee from the replicator, and sat down at the blinking console.

Tomas quickly read K'Hare's message, and quickly got dressed. He choose some civilian attire, as he was still wanting to keep his presence here unknown as best as possible from the general masses.

He found the right place, and seen K'Hare and someone he only seen once before.. at the change of command ceremony for TF86. Tomas forced himself to take a deep breath, to try and have the negative emotions towards Taylor pressed out of his mind. It wasn't Taylor's doing afterall, Tomas had agreed to stepping down from command of 86. FADM Sorac was the one that choose a replacement.

But it was easier said then done. Just as a father would have problems with any male taking his daughter and marrying her... it was almost the same thing with 86.

But from all reports so far, 86 has seemed to be in good hands, maintaining it's position as one of the best Task Forces in Star Fleet, not just the 4th Fleet.

Wolfe: *Approaching the table* Gentleman, sorry for being late. I came as soon as I got the message.

K'Hare stood up with some relish, happy to see his old commanding officer.  This was turning out to be a good day, first a challenge and now Wolfe was here.  Nothing would ruin this day.  "Dan, son of Taylor and from a House of many pilots, this is Wolfe, son of Wuir, House terleq."

K'Hare pointed to an empty chair, waved at the bar for another round, and sat back down.  He looked at Wolfe closely.  Something was different.  He seemed more comfortable.  He'd met the man two years before, at the first betleH competition.  There he took part but hardly seemed interested.  He looked more like the event was an obligation... now, he seemed happy to be here.

Tomas took the seat indicated by K'Hare and tried to make himself comfortable. It didn't take long for the waitress to drop off another round of blood wine, which was one of the things that Tomas didn't have to force himself to enjoy.

Wolfe: *After taking a big gulp of the liquid, and looks towards K'Hare* It has been along time my friend. How goes things with you and your house?

K'Hare took a slow drink trying to understand Wolfe's question?  Was he making a joke?  He decided to ignore it.  "I still live and there is BloodWine to drink!  What more does one need?"  He took another drink.  "Dan was just working his way to challenging me in a betleH match... friendly of course."

OFF:

I forgot to point out in the last post, the we decided this takes place in a VIP lounge so Wolfe didn't need to duck attention to get here.

Wolfe: Friendly you say? From the looks of it Dan, you should of just entered the competition! And yet you've challenged the mighty K'Hare. You are definately a gluton for punishment my friend.

"I think he just wishes to learn more about Klingon society.  I seem to spend my life teaching others the strengths and depth of Klingon culture... perhaps I should have been an Ambassador."  He took a drink while watching to see how hard the other two admirals would try not to laugh.

Wolfe: *Keeping as straight a face as possible* Ambassador K'Hare... has a certain ring to it I believe. Though I doubt an ambassador would have much time to help put these tournaments on.

Tomas looks over at Dan.

Wolfe: What's the matter Dan, cat's got your tongue?

I would think this event is exactly what an Ambassador would do.

Taylor was dumb struck to be sitting across the table from the Bravo Fleet Executive Officer, the man who’s job he now held the one who’s shoes he had to fill. It wasn’t often that meeting the brass bowled Taylor sideways this time for some reason it had, he suddenly realised both K’Hare and Wolfe were laughing while looking in his direction it was obvious Taylor was meant to be saying something.

“Oh yes, the cat” Said Taylor not quite following what Wolfe meant, instead of digging a hole for himself he decided to pick up an earlier comment “Challenging K’Hare isn’t foolish and I doubt I’d be dangerously injured, he’s skilled enough with a betleH not to harm me without a good reason”

OFF

OOC: Guess who many times I wrote how K’Hare’s skilled with a Lightsaber before getting it right *Shakes head*

Tomas listened as Taylor spoke, then leaned towards him, resting his elbows on the table. The mug of bloodwine was in one hand.

Wolfe: K'Hare is a Klingon, is that not good enough reason to hurt someone with a batleH?

Tomas began chuckling, and couldn't stop it from turning into a full fledged laugh.

Wolfe: But seriously, I would very much like to watch this exhibition match of yours. Who knows, maybe I'll have a chance to get one or two in of my own.

Title: Re: A late lunch

K'Hare laughed.  "A Klingon fights for his own reasons... but one can always find a reason."

Title: Re: A late lunch
Post by Dan on Feb 17th, 2005, 10:27am

Taylor laughed also “I’ve have few reasons to fight at this time of life, I did my share of fighting during youth.”

He took another sip of his drink “I don’t particularly want a reason to fight now, I just want to know how to should a new reason ever enter my life.”

"That is almost Klingon.  There is a saying... somewhere there is someone practicing and if you two should ever meet, he will be more prepared than you."

Title: Re: A late lunch
Post by Dan on Feb 17th, 2005, 1:19pm

Taylor chuckled "Practice makes perfect as my instructor used to say."

He took another sip "I can see the truth there, It has worked several times in my past. Hours and days of practice definatly made some of my actions perfect" he thought back to several of the hops he'd taken during the dominion war, perhaps one day he'd be able to divulge the great exploits there in, the exploits that he still didn't feel he'd deserved.

"As I said, I wish to learn how to fight with a betleH and possible one of the smaller one handed weapons too, I forget its name I've seen several Klingons carrying them."

His voice trailed off as he took another drink, he seemed lost in thought as if remembering where he'd seen the weapons.

Title: Re: A late lunch
Post by K`Hare totlh on Feb 17th, 2005, 7:10pm

K'Hare nodded.  "I assume you mean the meqleH, a one handed weapon usually used in pairs.  Some fighters will fight with a betleH and a single meqleH tucked into their belt as a backup in case they are disarmed."

He took a long drink.  "The weapon is used for close in fighting when the size of a betleH is a hindrance, especially against a non-Klingon enemy.  Its history is interesting."
