Title: Honor Modifier
Post by TalVur on Feb 9th, 2005, 11:32am

K'Hare, I noticed you didn't really tell people much about the honor modifier. Is it still going to have the same plusses and minuses?

Great Honor - (-2)
Honor - (-1)
Neutral (0)
Dirty - (+1)
Very Dirty - (+2)

Just figured I'd throw this out there for the new people, since they might 'accidentally' choose one score not realizing how much it may hurt or help them.

Here is the text from last year:

As a reminder, for each match you will decide how you fight. You can fight with
great honor (-2), honor (-1), neutral (0), dirty (+1), or very dirty (+2).

Fighting with honor will lower your combat skill by 1 point for that match.

Fighting very dirty will raise it by 2 but the crowd may not like it.

You choices for each match will be accumulated if you continue win. The way you fight only effects your score for one match but the sum of your choices will be your accumulated honor for the tournament. The competitor who accumulates the most honor during the competition will get a special award.

Yeah, just wanted to make sure the new people knew all this. I didn't see it in the rules post so I thought I'd say something. Thanks for clarifying.

i think the fight the same as my oponent options should be removed - it eliminates the tactical part of the game

But at the same time, don't you think you could adapt in the ring as to how your opponent is fighting? If they favor their right side, will you not swing at their left?

Just a thought.

you could - but there should be some penalty to it

perhaps then if you choose to fight the same as your opponent you are actually adapting, so it, halfs the penalty that is given to you, so if your opponent is fighting with great honor (-2) you notice this and have to fight with honor (-1), or if your opponent is fighting very dirty (+2) you notice this and have to fight dirty (+1). Such that you adapt but you can't match them becuase you have to learn their style of fighting throughout the match. This just means that if they fight with honor or dirty (-/+ 1, respectively) then you will fight as neutral.

Both last year and this year, fighting at the same honor level is a 0.5 penalty because, as has been suggested, you are letting your opponent take the initiative in the combat.

who gets the penalty ? both players or just one

seems to me the player who is taking the initive should not be penalized

If both players got it, it wouldn't be a penalty.

The modifier for fighting like your opponent is an extra -0.5 to the person doing it.

I am not sure I understand.  We can't realy tell what the other is setting on their Honor Modifyer.  Are you saying that if we unintentionaly set it for the same setting that -0.5 will be taking of?    ???

I think what he's saying is if you choose "fight same as opponent" that you are letting your opponent dictate the fight to you, so you are given a .5 penalty. But if you choose to say fight dirty and they happen to choose to fight dirty, then there's no penalty... you both are fighting on your own terms.. it just happens to be the same.

Now I don't see how you can choose to fight the same.  Far as I know we are not supposed to know what the other picks until time of the fight.  Though I have a guess that I won't have to worry much, don't know for sure.  Am sure there will be some who unintintionaly pick same one even if I didn't.

What he said.

Suppose you were fighting ta'pez and were fighting w/ honor... but he started fighting dirty.  You don't want him to have that advantage so you fight dirty back.

That is what it simulates.  Last year, when we introduced fighting this way, some people wanted to fight w/ honor or dirty... at the same level as the opponent.  They wanted to fight honorably unless the opponent fought dirty, they wanted to fight one step more honorable then the opponent... etc.  I got all kinds of email, so this year, you have to choose from the list and I included that one.  If something else needs to be on the list, suggest it.
