Title: Simple Things in Life
Post by TalVur on Feb 10th, 2005, 9:12pm

=/\= Xavier Fleet Yards =/\=

James didn't want to deal with the rush of attendees swarming off to the bars and restaraunts in the station, similarly he didn't want to attend the Klingon meal. Sure, he liked his gagh to squrim on the way down but tonight he just wanted to sit in some familiar surroundings and take it easy.

He had made his way out of the Opening Ceremony and found a turbolift. While everyone else was fighting their way to Sections Red and Blue 2, James was planning on heading up. He keyed the turbolift for up, and waited a moment.

The lift eventually arrived and the doors swished open. James stepped onto the lift and keyed for Section Blue 1. The lift quickly made its way up and stopped. Before he could step off he was greeted with a Security Officer.

"Where do you think you are going?" was the gruff question James was faced with.

James smiled at him and very curtly replied. "Sickbay."

The Security Officer looked at James for a moment. "Weapons?"

"None. Just taking a look at the facilities, you know?"

The Security Officer looked at James and seeing no harm in it, let him proceed down the short hallway to the Sickbay.

The glass doors swished open and James stepped inside. It was quite a bit larger than the Saturn's sickbay, but not nearly as extensive as the one at Starfleet Medical. As he walked in the doors he was greeted by an on duty doctor. Female, red hair. James smiled at her. He would definately like to enjoy a peanut butter sandwich in here.

Ah, the simple things in life, he thought. "I'm Lt. Tal'Vur, Chief Medical Officer for the USS Saturn...and you are?" he asked as he extended his hand.

Ah, the simple things in life, he thought. "I'm Lt. Tal'Vur, Chief Medical Officer for the USS Saturn...and you are?" he asked as he extended his hand.

"Kalay Meadow," the red head answered with a slightly impish grin.  "Just a simple, unassuming surgeon."  She set down the PADD she was holding.  "If you want a tour of the facilities, I'd suggest asking a nurse.  I'm fairly new here, and they don't let me touch anything yet."

James smiled at her. "New? I remember when I was new...You have to just grab things and have at. That's the best way to get past that 'not letting you touch things' bit."

James looked around the sickbay. "Well, Doctor Meadow, would you care to join me in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?" He motioned to the replicator hiding toward the back. "I didn't feel like having to fight through the throng of Klingons, and besides...it's peaceful in here."

"Hm," Kalay studied him momentarily before answering, "I'm allergic to peanuts, so I must decline your offer."

Reclaiming her PADD, she made a small shake of her head, "And 'new' does not mean 'inexperienced' in any sense of the word."

James wandered back to the replicator and made himself a small sandwich. He looked at it. Not quite as good as the real thing. He thought about what Dr. Meadow said about 'new'.

"Well, I wasn't referring to 'new' as inexperience, you're new to this sickbay. There is a certain amount of breaking in time, no doubt? Have they made you scrub all the hyposprays or whatever it is they do to 'break you in'?"

He smiled. He remembered when he first showed up on the Saturn those years ago. It had certainly been interesting. Doc Storm had hated him and really almost refused to speak to him and Dr. Akara....well, that was another thought for another time.

He smiled at Dr. Meadow. "I can show you some of the neatest little tricks with a dermal regenerator...like how to give a patient Klingon ridges..."

"Scrubbing hyposprays is a job for the techs, I'm a surgeon.  The nurses point me to where I need to be, and I do my job.  Easy."  Kalay offered a false smile.  "I don't take kindly to disrespect; and a proper nurse would avoid risking her job by 'breaking me in.'"

She tossed the PADD down again, "I'm a surgeon," she repeated, "not a plastic surgeon.  I have very little interest in tormenting my patients with silly little tricks--or worse yet, mutilating their physical identity.  You have no idea what I've seen, or where I've been.  You have no idea of my skills or abilities.  Maybe you're just trying to make conversation, harrah for you, but you're doing it in the wrong manner..."  She turned, looking for PADD she'd tossed.  It had travelled surpriningly far, but was still in one piece.

"Doctor?" a nurse arrived on the scene, picking up the PADD and holding it out for her.  "We have a couple of new incoming which need to be looked at."  As Kalay reclaimed the PADD, the nurse motioned to where she was needed.

"Besides," Kalay looked back to the Saturn's doctor, "I have work to do."

James frowned at Doctor Meadow's lack of control. More than once had a dermal regenerator come in handy in assisting Intel or Special Ops prepare for a mission. The best disguise was the one that is attached to your face, James thought.

He was almost glad that the patient had come in. James had found this woman brash, almost rude. He had offered some of the wisdom of his expierence and she had thrown a PADD. He took the last bite of his sandwich and left the sickbay.

James smiled at his mantra. "If you can't meditate, inebriate," he muttered as he made his way down the turbolift.
