Ness felt like he was about to pass out. He was still seeing guards every one hundred decks or so. He stopped to take a drink. He was sure he was suffering from exhaustion and who knows what else, but he wanted to get this over with.

"Deck 945..." Ness muttered to himself, "that means 945 decks left to climb. Hopefully he'd finish by morning. He wanted to see the final matches.

At deck 899, another guard, and another conversation when Ness had gone up another deck or two.

This time, as he continued, there was the distinct sound of steps behind him.
