Title: A funny thing happened on the way to the matches

Ing went straight to his room, where he entered a message programmed to be delivered to K'Hare when the totlh awoke. Then Ing went straight to bed.

The message read simply:
"I believe I have found DonK'Hare's motive. If I am correct, we are in no further danger. Summon me when you get this, and I will explain."

K'Hare woke up, dressed, and had a look at the comm system.  He looked quickly at the urgent messages and status reports for Task Force 86.

Then he scanned the senders and saw most were from off this base and outside his chain of command.  He frowned.  Most were high ranking officers from other task forces, probably wanting to 'touch base' and 'get to know each other' and get his support for some project.  He was going to ignore them all but one stood out.  Ing.

-/\- K'Hare to Ing:  Report to my quarters.  I will be departing to observe the matches in 15 minutes.  K'Hare out.  -/\-

"Acknowledged!" Ing shouted into the com over the blare of music. Grateful for the reason to take a break, he turned off Plague of Tribbles, grabbed his bag, and headed for the turbolift.

=/\= Ing to Security. Please verify that I have been cleared to be escorted to the quarters of K'Hare totlh. =/\=

Ing walked down the hall with is security escort. This time, K'Hare had apparently managed to program the door to open, rather than chime, when Ing pressed the button, so Ing stepped inside, announcing, "I am here."

With K'Hare's acknowledgment, Ing made sure the door shut behind him, with the security officer outside. "We have only a few minutes, so I will be brief. After some conversations last night, I believe I know why DonK'Hare has been doing what he has recently."

K'Hare simply nodded to indicate they were here to discuss the same thing.

"I am guessing this is all about the girl," Ing said. "Tauvits has been impressed enough by your reputation to wish to send his daughter to you for safety and education. It seems your reputation has reached as far as the mirror universe and convinced DonK'Hare to make the same choice."

K'Hare frowned.  "wovqut?"  He considered that possibility.  It was plausible enough considering the outcome but it didn't add up.

"We have to assume they have been watching us for some time to they understand our motives.  They have probably had spies here which means anyone could be originally from there.  And the attacks started, as far as we know, since the last tournament when the DonQ'olavraH was killed...  but all this work for the child?  Wouldn't it be simpler to bring her here, in our reality, and wait.  Let her spend the time it takes to adjust to our reality and be undetectable?   Then we wouldn't know of them."

He paced around a little thinking more.  "No, I suppose his intention for her may have been to get the child here, but that cannot be their main motivation.  And killing DonKhoal?  This was to convince us the escape was real?  I understand sacrificing a warrior to obtain a goal, but wouldn't the child be better served by someone so devoted?  Q'olavraH participated in a mind meld.  If DonKhoal was aware of the plan, she would have known."

Then an after thought.  "Unless he was so good he could hide it... but then that makes the sacrifice that much more costly."

"As you pointed out, they had no reason to come here, to Xavier," Ing observed. "But DonK'Hare took steps to make sure Q'ol knew that this was where they were headed. The fact that she then escaped with the girl? As you suspected, it seems so convenient that DonK'Hare most likely allowed the escape."

"As for DonKhoal," Ing continued, "I have requested a test to see if the body we recovered is a clone, or a fake of another sort. The transporter could have been programmed to beam DonKhoal to safety in their universe, while substituting this corpse in his place. Even if the corpse turns out to be real, it might even be the remains of a third Khoal, from yet another dimension, substituted the same way."

"Why did DonK'Hare allow Q'olavraH to see his version of KDB? Why did he take pains to explain to her how women are treated in his universe?" Ing posed the questions, then gave his answers. "These things make sense if he was attempting to convince Q'olavraH to take in the girl. He was showing her how hard life was over there for his daughter, so that Q'olavraH would be persuaded to take her in."

"You theorized that there was something personal in this against you - this is why we took the Scott rather than the Hegh'ta to come here. Well, here is your answer: Another student was being sent, to you."

K'Hare decided to play the foe in this discussion.  They would get to the conclusion faster.

"Wouldn't it be simpler to let her sit in this reality for enough time to change her quantum flux, and then just drop her off at KDB?  I have gained students with less.

And why attack the Scott on its way to KDB.  If they had waited a few weeks, with their spies on board or observed the ship using whatever method, they could have taken its computer after it synced with KDB and gained more information..."  This he answered his own questions.  "Unless the plan was to get take the ship and get their men on KDB."

He considered and paced.  "Isn't it just as likely that his attempt to capture Q'olavraH was for the purpose of raising the child?  That would explain his speaking so freely with her.  And showing her KDB destroyed could have been part of an attempt to demoralize her."

"Who would care for the child while it waited for the quantum flux to dissipate? And if they dropped her off in that manner, who would tell the tale of her family? And how could DonK'Hare be sure you would take her in and protect her?" Ing argued.

"And remember, first, they had to research you, to be sure that you and Q'olavraH were fit to raise the child. Many of the attacks could have been probes to discover this."

"As for spies," Ing said, "I suspect DonK'Hare's visits over here were part of some larger operation, an operation which could still be ongoing. However, his personal interest in you would be because of the girl. And if DonK'Hare was merely part of a larger operation, he wouldn't have been able to use that operation's resources for his personal objective."

"Lastly, consider this:" Ing offered, "If she were your daughter, in which universe would you prefer for her to be raised in?"

"We don't know enough about how their universe works but here, if I wanted to divert resources, I have the power to do it.  I do think that either I am a side interest or the events are random.

As for where I would prefer my child to be raised... the answer is obvious.  In the real universe.

Now, I have duties.  Think on this more.  I am sure we will have more time to spend on this."
