Title: The ties that bind us Post by K`Hare totlh on Feb 28th, 2005, 3:16am K'Hare had invited Q'olavraH to his room and she arrived right on time. What he had prepared was sure to surprise her, but it felt right. Q'ol rang the chime and was surprised that K'Hare was standing at the door when he opened it. He was dressed formally and in the same manner he had asked of her. The lighting was low... too low. He was up to something. She stepped in and looked around, her eyes used to the light in the hall and not seeing much detail. But she didn't see danger either. When he pointed to the couch she sat down. K'Hare remained standing. "I need to speak of my mother. Do your borrowed memories include anything of her?" Q'ol tried to focus on the memories Khoal had given her as she had been practicing, but she couldn't find any memory of the 'other' K'Hare's mother. She shook her head. K'Hare said, "Her name was lindara." As soon as she heard the name she saw the image of a half romulan, half Klingon woman. She also saw an uncanny resemblance to wovqut. "I see her face and now I remember she is your, I mean his mother. She looks so much like wovqut in the face." Q'ol frowned. "There is something else, something important but I can't remember it. Something about her linage. Maybe she is from an important romulan house." K'Hare frowned at that. "That I don't know of. I didn't remember what she looked like until I saw wovqut. The image of her brought back the face of my mother... including her ears, the sharp thin eyebrows. I have few other memories of her. But what is important right now is that yes, she was half Romulan and some sort of noble." Q'ol looked at him not understanding the point until he walked over to the table and lit a few candles. Suddenly it all made sense. She knew what he was about to do. Her emotions welled up in her. Why now? That he had never done this before was not surprising... he had no House, little memory of his family. Then she understood. "This is because of wovqut." He nodded. “Because of the child, because of things that could happen, we need to formalize that which we both feel to be true. We need to insure that none can argue the bond.” She nodded indicating that she understood and expressed a concern. "But this is rarely done at our age... and K'rahl... " K'Hare looked serious. "There is more to the ritual than the common usage. This act just formalizes our relationship. I do not expect anything else to change." She nodded, finally understanding fully. She joined him next to the table and he began. He repeated the few details they both already knew of his mother, then it was her turn. Q'olavraH began. "I am the daughter of q'marI who is the daughter of q'laraH. My mother was born on the colony world of QI'tengquo. Her mother taught her how to weave and create things to clothe those on the colony, and also to make fine under tunics that were sent off world for the warriors of the Empire to wear under their armor. q'marI was considered to be one of the best of the weavers. She met poq, who took her as mate. Together they had children of which I am the fourth. My mother taught me also how to weave when I was not helping my father in the fields. My mother taught me how to fight with the meqleH and how to hunt." She smiled at memories of her childhood. And then continued the story of her mother. "When I went away to learn the ways of the warrior on the homeworld, the colony was invaded by an unknown enemy. The story was told me of how my mother gave the young girls she was teaching the art of weaving each a blade but told them to stay back unless she fell. She fought valiantly and killed more than 20 of the enemy while protecting her charges. The enemy was driven off, my mother died in battle, something she always wished for but thought would never happen unless it was in battle with weeds in the field." She chuckled slightly since her mother had said that very thing on many occasions. 'The only battle I will die in is if the weeds overrun me while I'm pulling them'. She looked at K'Hare then a smile on her face. K'Hare smiled and told the computer to raise the lights. He then grabbed a barrel of his own elixir and opened it and they toasted. "You are my sister now, both in feeling and now in fact. No one can deny it. Though we each have other alliances, we have a bond that cannot be broken except by our own decision." He got up and started toward the door. “Now, let’s go eat and see how wovqut is.” OFF: R'uustai The R'uustai is a ceremony in which two individuals bond together to become brothers or sisters. It is a solemn ceremony which includes the lighting of ceremonial candles, the wearing of warrior's sashes and intonations honoring the individual's mothers. |
