Memories of previous tournaments
« on: Jan 14th, 2005, 10:58am »

To be honest, I [K'Hare's player] was considering giving up BF when the first tourney happened.  I'd only been on one ship, a Klingon one, and it was always slow.  We had trouble getting players to post and stay.  I went to the tourney hoping to make a splash and convince others that they had to be on my ship (I was XO).

So I went to the tourney and on the night before the matches began I went into the bar.  Standing at the bar was a bolian, or maybe he was half andorian.  Regardless, he was blue and in character, I found him offensive so I attacked him, but only verbally.

In the same scene a Klingon be' entered.  The description, the detail of the writing told me I had found someone who could simm a Klingon, and then she ate a bowl of Strawberries enjoying the sweetness.  I read it again... it made no sense.  How coulda player who got every other detail be so wrong about something so random.  Why would a Klingon female want to eat sugar rich food?  And then I knew and I acted on that info but I didn't say why.  A few scenes later, I mentioned why, in character, having never asked the player what their intent was, and I was right.  And the other player was impressed that someone else had even noticed the subtlety.  That simple understanding has led to my strongest friendship in BF.

So for me, this event holds a special meaning and I will be forever grateful to Durkis for coming up with the idea, to Tauvits for giving me back what I gave out, and to Q'olavraH for just being.

Note that this isn't about this simm, its about simming in general. Think of this as an odd joint mission, but one that attracts some of the best writers in BF.  Take advantage of that.

Anybody want to recall some stuff from last year?

Tauvits met K'Hare at the first one and they had some great barroom debates. He'd never admit it, but Tauvits held his own debating K'Hare while I think Tauvits was surprised that there was this obnoxious Klingon who verbally sparred with everyone and never resorted to simple physical violence.

K'Hare met Q'olavraH there and they have been friends ever since... much to the chagrin of K'rahl.

K'Hare and ta'pez had a history predating it and their conflict could be felt by anyone watching. The final match between Q'ol and ta'pez was something few who were there will ever forget... or forgive.

F'Larn and (character name escapes me) got engaged last year. There were rumors about Saji and ta'pez. Satian and Starfire almost took the combat out of the ring after *SOMEONE* fought disgracefully.

Anyone paying attention would have seen K'Hare act very odd about an unusual bottle of Bloodwine given to him by Durkis and K'Hare learned something about his family history that changed him. Look for that again.

Anyone else have memories to share? The key is not to overrun the main action, but to have a chance for your characters to interact with each other. After the competition you can continue the friendship or rivalry by keeping in contact over sub space. It is almost impossible to keep track of all the little things that happen and it is impossible for your character to be involved in every little thread.

One of the threads that ta'pez and I have planned is a dinner celebrating 5 years for the IKS meHHaj out of character. In character, it will be a dinner remembering the warriors who died serving her and the completion of another year of service to the Empire. Anyone is free to come and watch just be wary of the Klingons who have served on the ship, for they will seek attention and will want to tell their stories.

I was at the last competition, but it was litterally my first week playing my new character, so I had no idea what I was doing with him.

I think about half way through I started hinting a character plot thread for him, one that I'm planning on bringing back for this year's event.

The Tapez/Q'olavraH fight also cemented another couple of aspects of S'ol, his mouth, and his strong sence of fair play.

Thanks Chang. I could have never givin So'l such a strong moral compass without you to provide such a wonderful example of what not to do.

Well, I met quite a few people, was accused of being a Borg drone,  insulted an opponent by smashing his Batleth into two, got kicked out in the first level itself, then just sort of hung around and got drunk......

Then of course, there was the conversation between me and K'hare about my first match with the NPC, and about the error when it came to destroying the Batleth.

Other than that however, not much else happened for me :p

I can only second much of what K'Hare said about the first tournament.  Watching the interaction was wonderful for me, and of course, Q'ol met K'Hare, and I met his player.  Both of whom continue to challenge me and my Klingon alter ego.  Both of whom I have grown rather fond of.

The second tournament I went into sort of lost with Q'olavraH.  She had gotten 'married' the year before just before the tourney, had birthed a set of twins before the second tourney, and I think she was sort of at a loss as to what to do with herself (or I was at a loss as to what to do with her?).

I had no solid plans, no preconcieved story lines except the one K'Hare was working on about some of his background (which I had been not so patiently waiting to learn about for a year at this point), so I went in not really knowing what would happen with Q'ol other than she would compete and compete with honor.

As the competition progressed, things happened that I did not expect.  Q'olavraH as a Klingon 'person' came into her own, at least I think so.

She found out that things are not always what they should be, she knew that some had no honor, but she also found out that some who she respected and loved could resort to fighting with less honor than she thought them capable of when confronted with an enemy that they truely despised.  It changed her, in way I am not even aware of yet.

I have been looking forward to this year's tournament with great anticipation, I will learn more about Q'olavraH's best friend that she didn't know, I will get to possibly have a rematch with that evil chang being, and even if he doesn't bring his honor with him this year, there is a still a chance I could beat his cheating Klingon butt. Wink

The last two tourneys have been events I wouldn't have missed for anything, and I'm sure at the end of this one I'll feel the exact same way about it.

As you know all to play the goodie goodie klingons people have a tendency of playing is a no no for me.

What you have seen is but a tip of the ice berg on the overall relationship. People will know the way Ta'pez acted but few will know of the reasons for it and what caused it .

Which btw is just fine, I am glad i could help you out with  the character development by posting in the way it did.

50 % of the blame is that of Q'ols  - she  was the one who pulled off all the stops to write a  really engaging story about this.

I would have never written an ending in the way i did were it not for the fact that Q'ol gave me a few ideas of her own on this.

The goal back then was to pull one over K'Hare and K'rahl who had not been expecting this Cheesy

There will be more cheng mischief this year around and i am looking forward to having even more fun this year then the last one.

having my crew here - will be fun.  I expect they will be just as unruly as others.

Actually I forgot about the whole honor/dishonor scandal of her fighting.  I remembered her hanging out with ta'pez and getting all tainted.

The betleH tournaments hold fond memories for me, as well. Like K'Hare, my attachment to Bravo Fleet had been waning. My sim was going fine, but there was little of "The Bravo Fleet Experience" happening to me. I wasn't about to leave, but I was certainly sleep-walking my way through TGCO duties and TF/Fleet-wide matters.

Then, out of the tournament, I've made friendships with individuals I never would have interacted with otherwise. Romulans, Klingons, Feddies... you name it. Both IC and out. It's led me to a greater (comparatively, clearly) understanding of Klingons - as noticed by the fact that I now have to spell it "betleH" or I wince - and has introduced me to some of the finest roleplayers I know. And IC, it's been plenty of fun. Tauvits now actually has connections amongst the fleet. K'Hare, for one, clearly. Once upon a time, a Romulan called Ro, who has since faded from BF. And his friend and bunkmate from last year, Loj - a friendship which, OOC, also led me to XFY.

Great memories in particular... obviously, the very first night, the verbal sparring, Tauvits' completely inadvertent offending of K'Hare which, I think, has led to a degree more thoughtfulness on his part. Being defeated by a marine - a marine, of all the indignity! Wink - in the first tournament. His match against G'Trell the second year, an opponent he deemed more worthy of victory yet whom he beat solely because he was happy to fight dirty. The fight against Ta'pez, where he abandoned any chance at even possibly winning by holding himself to a higher standard than before, and had his behind handed to him on a plate.

The fact that he never intended to get so far - third place wasn't anything he nor I had anticipated... this year, I think he'll be out to get so far again without fighting so shamefully.

So I'm going to raise my drink (orange juice, alas) to more insults, debates, fights, honours, dishonours, friendships made and friendships strengthened, Blood Wine drunk and embarrassments suffered, and, above all... to fun in Year Three!
