I was doing some researching on the KDB site and stumbled on this ADVERTISEMENT Tauvits took a few deep breaths before he slowly reached out to grip his bat'leth and take it off the hook. He had spent the last few hours in nothing more than deep contemplation in the aftermath of his run-in with Graves. Victory against Hurak, G'Trell, and those before them had hardly been his finest hour. Here, he was to face last year's champion in combat. And Graves had been right - if he fought in a way which shamed him, which was less than the standard he so often held himself and others to... in a way which his past trainers and past commanders would be disappointed in, then it was no victory at all. There was no shame in beating anyone if he battled against the rules. Because this wasn't a real fight for his life. It was... a different sort of test. With a quiet groan, he gripped the blade and took it off the stand. He had won little approval from the crowd in the past, and wasn't looking for their cheers now. Winning or losing - and against Ta'pez, it was probably losing - he would fight as he ought to. Grimacing at what the shadows of his mind called this 'madness', Tauvits shook his head and turned to face the arena. Ta'pez had already been there when Tauvits entered the arena. To his left in the first row a whitehaired klingon with the same House crest was sitting surrounded by the what appeared to be his personal guard. Tauvits assumed from the posture of the others that this most certainly had to be Chang, son of ne'thal. The old klingon was rewowned for his name and his position of the House of Chang. A House that many klingons didnt mention and if so only as a curse. He had talked to Ta'pez yesterday, and he had seemed pleasant for a klingon. Tauvits had reflected upon what Ta'pez had said and wondered whether the fact that Ta'pez belonged to the house of chang had anything to do with his views and attitutes about the past and the importance of the family name and the honor that was encompassed by it. The two oponents aproched each other. Ta'pez eyed him with a black stare devoid of the menancing glances that most klingons displayed before a fight. Tauvits gave Ta'pez a deep, respectful nod. Unlike before, the Klingon was not an enemy, not someone to be beaten. He was a fellow competitor... a rival, indeed, but a test as well, a challenge to be overcome. Tauvits knew he was better than he had been last year. Doubtless the defending champion was as well, however. Tauvits: Shall a fight to disarming be sufficient, or would you prefer first blood or knockout? Ta'pez: The choice is yours Admiral. Tauvits considered this. Disarmament was something which could come about too quickly. He had little desire to wake up with a concussion a day later, but then again, first blood could often go quite badly. He hefted his bat'leth into a more combative, yet non-aggressive, posture. Tauvits: First blood, then, perhaps, HoD? Ta'pez looked up and smiled, to some this would have been a rather treathening display of a very notable set of sharp teeth but the amused spark in his eyes and the light tone of his reply. Ta'pez: First blood it is. The judge who was listening in went back while the Opponents redied themself for the comming engagement. Judge: Ta'pez vs Tauvits. First blood match. Tauvits gave another deep nod, gripping his bat'leth tighter and raising it defensively. A few murmurings from the crowd erupted, but Falco held his ground, merely adjusting his posture. His weight shifted onto the balls of his feet, he did his best to not tense up, and his eyes never left Ta'pez. He'd abandoned his tried-and-true fighting technique of holding back and evaluating an opponent's technique before... now, with an opponent as strong as the Klingon, he had no intention of taking any chances where unnecessary. Ta'pez seened relaxed, rocking from side to side as if to warm up. His serene face didnt display any emotion. However his "silence" was not for long, out of the blue not indicating anybefore Ta'pez launched into an attach. Tauvits had always considered himself to be a good judge of an opponent's fighting technique, but he hadn't even seen Ta'pez's attack coming before the Klingon lunged forward. His bat'leth was raised only just in time to block to assault, and he took a quick step back to avoid the full strength of the blow. He should have seen it coming, but didn't allow himself to dwell on the failure, raising his bat'leth for his own assault, light, quick and evaluating against the Klingon's defences. Ta'pez smiled, once again the look seemed threatening but the klingon was obviously aproving. Ta'pez followed up but the element of suprise was not there, nevertheless Tauvits found himself hardpressed. Finally he countered himself and Ta'pez gring grew even wider as they increased their pace considerably. Tauvits could feel a few beads of sweat threatening to break out on his forehead already, from both the effort and anticipated effort. He was beyond outclassed, but wasn't about to give up yet - the speed of the combat was the one thing he could keep up with. Kept on the defensive by Ta'pez, however, it was all he could do to counter each blow, and he found himself falling back step by step at the Klingon's greater strength and greater skill. Ta'pez: You fight well Admiral Tauvits smiled ironicly, because Ta'pez attacks grew faster and more precise He had observed his oponent on several of the matches and could se how Ta'pez was doing his "dance". He knew that they wouldnt be able to hold the pace much longer and that Ta'pez would attempt his break real soon. No sooner he had uttered this thought to himeself Ta'pez had attacked. But what was suprising was the was that Ta'pez purposly slid down onto the ground after his blow. The suprise was compounded by the swift kick aimed at one of his knees. With Ta'pez on the Ground and Tauvitis falling, the batleh were still fighting each other. Breaching Ta'pez defenses as he fell Tauvitis he disarmed Ta'pez. This was indeed a suprise and the crowd roared at the excitement. Ta'pez mererly laughted heartlitly, not something you would expect from a defeated klinong. This realization was followed with rustry warmth filling the air. Without Thinking Tauvits touched his cheek and found blood on his hands. Ta'pez: First blood it is Admiral. The two opponents, got up and laughed together. The crowd roared in aproval. Once again Ta'pez had delivered amusement, and the Federation Admiral had proved himself worthy. Tauvits dabbed lightly at his cheek again, his heart sinking with realisation... but not surprise. A shorter match than he had intended... but more intense than any of his others, and more of a trial. A slight, genuine yet disappointed smile tugged at his lips. Tauvits: I should have chosen death, then, perhaps? He shook his head dryly, then stepped over to the Ta'pez's fallen bat'leth and picked it up with his free hand. A quick flip adjusted his grip, and he extended the weapon towards the Klingon. Tauvits: Well won, HoD. Ta'pez:Thank you Admiral. It was my honor and my pleasure. ::smirking then:: Next year I wont be able to fool you. Tauvits: You flatter me. I wonder indeed if twenty-five years of drilling and fencing can quite compare to a career - or lifetime? - of using such a blade in battle as well, however. Ta'pez: Your blade is your life. ::pointing at the betleH he was holding:: This one belonged to Shatok HoD of the House of meH'Handra. ::elaborating because Tauvitis didnt seem to realize this:: She was a close friend. She betrayed me and is dead now. I wield her blade and her honor. Tauvits: *nodding* That I can understand. I do not know the past of my blade, only that it was a gift from a comrade of mine who has since fallen... he was no warrior, and his honour could often be questioned... but I still bear it for him. At my home, however, there is a family blade... though it is rusty now and serves for little more than a mantelpiece decoration. Ta'pez: Come to the Halls of Kor with me. It was a battle well fought and it deserves some good bloodwine. Tauvits grinned at him. He supposed this was right. He had lost - and a man with Tauvits' pride didn't take losing without a certain amount of annoyance - but it had been against a better opponent, pure and simple, rather than down to his own mistakes. It came as a slight surprise, as he nodded slowly, to realise... he had no shame, as he had after victories. Tauvits: I can't argue with that. A drink after a short, sharp shock like this is often a particularly good idea... and I could do with some bloodwine...! The two laughed and left together on this last comment and departed from the arena.
