Call to assemble
« on: Feb 9th, 2005, 12:11am »

The word went out for all the warriors and guest to assemble.  This would be the second largest assembly of the whole tournament.  Only the final award ceremony was expected to be bigger.

Spectators and participants alike made their way to the various places where they would watch the opening ceremony.

While the Xavier crew continued to perform their usual tasks the competition areas all became eerily quiet, all that is, except for the large central hall.

Together, one a small stage, three Admirals from three worlds talked to each other while technicians ran around them hooking up various sensing devices.  Rear Admiral Wade Durkis, the Chair and founder of this event talked to K'Hare totlh, the representative of the Klingon Empire and returning judge while Vice Admiral  Valren Arelwynn directed the workers.  Finally something in their posture changed and the a hush spread through the assembled crowd.

Opening Speech

The large convention hall was packed with all the competitors for the tournament and many others who managed to work their way either by special invite or other means.  A couple of NCO technicians were adjusting the cameras and microphones that would take broadcast their message to others watching through out the space station.  Word was out that it was also to be broadcast beyond Xavier as the popularity of the competition was growing. Something Admiral Durkis took much pride in.

Technician 1: Sir we are ready to go

Technician 2: The signal will start broadcasting once your ready.

Wade turned to K’Hare, the tolth nodded and the admiral then turned to Arwlyenn.

Durkis: Admiral, as host, your up first. Give them your welcome to Xavier and then if you would introduce me, I’ll take it from there.

The silver haired Betazoid stepped up to the microphone.

Arelwynn: Ladies, gentleman and betleH competition fans.  Those here on Xavier and watching throughout the quadrants.  Thank you for your interest in this fine, growing tradition. *pausing*  On behalf of Task Force 44 and the crew of Xavier Fleet Yards, welcome!  I want to introduce you to the chair and founder of this fine event, Rear Admiral Wade Durkis.

Admiral Durkis steps up to the microphone and looks around the rooms at the warriors standing before him.  He saw many a different look on the faces before him.  They ranged from the battle hardened Veterans who had already sized up everyone in the room.  To the slightly nervous first timers who were trying to steal glances at those around them.  There were those who held straight faces, showing no sign of emotion or response to the judges standing before them. And of course there were a few with a smugness about them.  But there was one unifying thing amongst them that Wade could see. It was in their eyes. The hunger for compeition was there.  It was as sign of a great tournament ahead of them.

Durkis: On behalf of myself and my fellow judges, I would like to welcome you all to the Third Annual Bravofleet betleH Competition.

An applause went through the crowd before Wade continued.

Durkis: To our returning competitors, I’m glad to see you have returned to once again participate in our fine tournament. To all of you joining us for the first time, thank you for helping our competition grow.

Each year I feel the betleH Competition has grown stronger and more challenging, yet the goal remains the same: To bring the fleet, and many cultures, to closer understanding and appreciation of each other… through the thrill of combat!

This got a little more of a rise out of the crowd as cheers rose to those last words.

Durkis: With each tournament I know we come closer to that goal.  I have tried to live my life by one philosophy: “That, which does not kill us, only makes us stronger. No matter what the results of the tournament may be, may you walk away from this a stronger individual then when you came here.

It’s an honor to have you with us. Good luck to you all!

Applause went out to through the crowd again. The admiral was about to step aside when something popped in his head. He looked out at the audience again the applause ended and the crowd looked up at Wade.

Durkis: qa’ wIje’meH maSuv.

Admiral Durkis could see an approving look on those present who could speak Klingon. He repeated it again a little louder.

Durkis: qa’ wIje’meH maSuv.

The eagerness to fight was growing in many of the warriors.  To the surprise of his fellow judges, Wade quickly walked around the podium and jumped down to the floor with the rest of the warriors. They parted ways as much as they could to allow him to stand in the center of them. He slowly turned and looked at the warriors standing in  front of him and repeated.

Durkis: qa’ wIje’meH maSuv…… qa’ wIje’meH maSuv……. qa’ wIje’meH maSuv.

He could then hear one voice followed by another.

Crowd: qa’ wIje’meH maSuv…. qa’ wIje’meH maSuv.

It grew loader and loader amongst the crowd.

Crowd: qa’ wIje’meH maSuv!…. qa’ wIje’meH maSuv!

Wade keep turing to face more and more of the crowd.  He caught what appeared to be a disapproving look from Admiral Verylenn.  But at the moment it didn’t matter.  He was feeling something inside him.

Crowd: qa’ wIje’meH maSuv.! qa’ wIje’meH maSuv!

Finally raising his voice just enough to be heard about the crowd.

Durkis: Qapla’!

Crowd: Qapla’!

Off:

qa’ wIje’meH maSuv = “we fight to enrich the spirit”

James had followed the Admiral to the opening ceremony. It had been an interesting day, to say the least. James didn't know if he could describe it as bad or good, up to this point. Now was the time. He made his way to the front as Admiral Durkis joined K'Hare and Valwynn on the stage.

The betazoid made his short speech and turned it over to Wade. His speech was stirring, and James found himself shouting along with the Klingons and raising his fist in salute. "qa’ wIje’meH maSuv!" James shouted with them. "qa’ wIje’meH maSuv!" Over and over they shouted, his pride swelling in his chest. "Qapla'!"

And as soon as it had started, it was done. The Admiral stepped away from the podium. No doubt K'Hare would welcome everyone as well and announce the beginning of the tournament. James looked toward the stage and waited in anticipation. It would be hard for him to top Wade.

The judges stepped off the stage in different directions and went into the crowd, each seeking to greet old and new friends.

OFF:

Actually, no.  I did the big speech last year and I don't want to reign on Wade's parade.

ON:

Amongst and apart he stood with and from the crowd of budding and experienced fighters. Hands folded across his breast, the near dead eyes on his expressionless face scanned the room as they responded heartily to Rear Admiral Durkis' cries. And when the commotion fetered dow to an rhythmic resonance of grunts and mutterings, Loj smirked a half-knowing smile.

Much good it would do him in enriching something that was dead. And unless success meant rewriting the tablets of history, there would be none for him. Only the feeding of the void that hungered sustenance.

Blinking once, he stepped away from the crowd, while the judges of the competition were still about and moved towards the nearest available bar. Bloodwine would help stall that hunger indeed.

Verghese wan't standing exactly in the crowd, more towards it's edge than everything else. He only paid partial attention to the Admiral's speech, instead focusing on the crowd that gathered. He studied the faces of his opponents, trying to determine which one was the one he was supposed to fight.

It had been just a short while ago since he had sat with Tapez and the others. Seeing T'lai here at the tournament was disturbing, to say the least, especialyl after what happened back on the Solar Bounty....

His thoughts were interrupted by the ending words Admiral's speech, and then he was even more surprised as the Admiral got off the stage and into the crowd. He was speaking a few words in Klingon, and from what Verghese could translate, it meant “we fight to enrich the spirit”

A rather fitting end to the speech, to say the least. The judges then got off the stage and began wandering amongst the crowd. Rather than stay and chat however, Verghese decided to return back to his quarters. He was going to need practise for his fight later....

Kvok, G'trell and Ta'pez had been standing durinng the Ceremony somewhere in the middle of the crowd. There were quiet a few people who had aproached either him of g'trell. Both Klingons and Humans remember the two warriors who had been part of the Tournament  since it's begining.

After the speech noticed how many more warriors had assemebled this year to fight - indeed it would be a most glourious tournament.

K'Tar stood with his brother and sister with crossed arms as he listened to the judges speak.  The speech was soon over and K'Tar turned to his younger siblings.  "Interesting speech," K'Tar commented.

"I suppose," his sister, Baretha replied.

"Not bad for a federation admiral," his brother, G'Narr said.

K'Tar wondered if Ceres atteneded the speech and turned his attention back to his siblings.  "Now, tell me the reason you are here.  The real reason.  You did not come all this way to watch a tournament in Federation Space."

Baretha sighed.  "Your perceptions are sharp as ever my brother.  We are here because we believe some members from the House of B'reml are here.  Possibly to kill you, brother."

K'Tar's eyes widened with hatred.  "The house of B'reml is here!?  Where!?"  The House of B'Reml were considered to be cowards by K'Tar and possible Romulan or pirate corraborators.  B'Reml had left K'Tar's father's side in battle during the Dominion war, fleeing while K'Tar's father fought the last good fight.  "If I see them, I will KILL them!" K'Tar said, barely controlling his rage.  He wanted nothing better than to slaughter the House of B'Reml...to kill any who even thought well of the house.

"We are here to keep an eye out for them brother and to protect you," G'Narr stated.

"Thank you, but I can look out for myself."  K'Tar then spotted Ceres.  "Have a drink.  I will join you shortly."  K'Tar then made his way over to Ceres.

On:

Tomas Wolfe, of the house of Terlek,  stood towards the back of the assembly with Aurora McCloud at his side. He didn't envy the Flag Officers at the front who were doing speeches. Tomas hated speeches. Tomas hated everything about being a flag officer, yet duty pushed him harder and harder to do it.

But not now, not for the next few days, at least for the most part. Out here, no one cared who he was, what rank he was, or where he came from. He was just another opponent, one that was in their way to their goal of victory.

And Tomas liked that. He didn't want to be known as "The Bravo Fleet XO" or anything like that. He wanted to be known, most especially by the many Klingons present, as a skilled fighter. To be the champion would be even better, but Tomas could walk away from this satisified if he was seen by others as skilled.

It was funny to him, before Ro came along, he really didn't care all that much for other Klingons to accept him. It was something about Ro, knowing more about his own heritage then he did, that motivated Tomas to learn more, to embrace what his parents gave him.

Parents. A half human and half Vulcan mother who found love with a Klingon, and Tomas was the result. How many years had it been since he turned his back on his father for trying to push Tomas into going "home" and learning the ways of being a true Klingon warrior. But it wasn't Tomas who ended up leaving, it was his father.

Wolfe tried not to let his feelings convince him that he was a dissappointment to his father. But that was probably why that he didn't carry a tradiational name either. Tomas Wolfe was never addressed in the formal way of Wolfe, son of Wuir.

It never really bothered him, until now. Here, in the presence of so many of his people, he could feel their proudness. And for the first time in his life, he realized what he had been missing.

Ro and her betazoid mind probing must of felt his inner turmoil, because she grab his arm and look up into his eyes with a look of concern. At first, he wondered if she thought he was afraid. But that only lasted a few seconds. Tomas wasn't afraid of anything happening to himself, and his soon to be wife would of had to know that about him by now. Maybe her own experiences with her father gave her a unique insight into what he was going through.

She didn't ask though what was wrong, she instead was being there for emotional support. Probably because getting Tomas to speak of Wuir  was like trying to get a Cardassasian to speak the truth.

Besides, the chanting that Durkis had everyone doing would of made it impossible anyway. It was almost time for Tomas to earn the respect of those present.

And right now, that was more important to him then even the woman standing next to him.

ON:

roS was quit impressed with the course of events so far.

First he had found his quarters for the time he would be here and gotten some sleep.

This morning he had gotten to sit back and enjoy a decent meal that didn't try to eat him or his stomack at the local bar and deposit his weapon at the area.

After that he had wandered around taking in the sights and having fun being rude to Starfleet types.

It was during his wandering and tauting that the notice to attend the Opening assembly had been passed to him.

ros stood and listened until Admiral Durkis hopped down and started chanting "qa’ wIje’meH maSuv"

At first roS didn't understand him but once the chat started taking hold of those around roS he caught the meaning and was soon shouting it right back at the Admiral.

To fight... yes... that was the spirit... to join in battle... to push yourself to the limits of your abilities against another!

After the speach was over roS was more then ready to do just that... to find someone and release some of his pent up excitment... but who?

ros started looking around for anyone who might feel as he did... someone who might be as excited as he and willing to burn it off in the gym.

Ta'pez was milling around greeting others when  he heard somebody laugh, it was a familiar laugh. He turned around and saw Poq.

"I thought I smelled something foul" Ta'pez said in jest.

"Must be your fould armor, you keep pissing yourself  when you see a proper warrior!"  retorted PoQ.

The two Warriors greeted each other like brothers, for they were of the same house. "I didnt realize you would follow us so quickly" Ta'pez said.

"You know your father, he likes suprises." PoQ answered.

Ta'pez nodded. "Where is he?"  He said looking  around.

"He stayed on the ship , he will join later in the evening, he is not much of a ceremony lover" PoQ replied.

The two men laughed once more and then Ta'pez  said. "You have met G'trell, Have you not?"

PoQ noded and turned his attention towards .  "Indeed such a fine be' would not escape my memmory."

Ta'pez smiled as he looked around, it was good to have his crew and his house gathered around him. The hall was quiet empty and the mood was  festive. High ranking admirals from both the Klingon and Federation forces were present.

He had seen K'Hare, and the petaQ had seen him as well,  he was angry and and on the edge. He needed no empathic gift to know that K'Hare was raging inside, although it was a nice confirmation. Ta'pez chuckled, it was a pleasure for him to be such a thorn in the 'tolths eye.

While the two warriors were conversing next to him he surveyed the room with his senses being carefull since many alliens were among them, some of them were empathic.

He wondered who the empath was and quickly realized that one of the federation admirals mates must be the one.

He kept his observation subtle and avoided obvious moves, he most certainly didnt want to     bring attention to himselv in a dubious manner.

A leaflet caught his attention on the floor, he picked it up and chuckled. It was a semi loud chuckle but one of the klingons  next him saw it.

Ta'pez gave him the leaflet after the Klingon laughed and this one proceeded to share it with his group, who all in turn did  the same.

K'Hare had enjoyed Wade's speech and had entered the crowd to greet friends and pay respect to other officers as his position required.

As he moved through the crowd he saw ta'pez and his festive mood soured.  He turned so they would not meet in the crowd.

He nodded to a commodore he'd met the previous year when he heard the annoying, distinctive laugh.  Again, ta'pez, distracting him and ruining his mood.  He saw ta'pez pass something to another Klingon who laughed and passed it again.

When the piece of paper had reached the fourth set of hands the Klingon looked, laughed and caught K'Hare's eye.  He quickly turned serious, dropped the leaflet and moved away.

Curious, K'Hare moved over to the spot and saw what it was.  Another printout, another copy of the ta'pez's rendition of K'Hare overly large, very prominant romulan ears.  K'Hare growled and almost went after the Chang on the spot, but he was lost in the crowd.

In an even greater sour mood, K'Hare stomped out of the hall and made his way back to his room.

=/\= Opening Ceremony =/\=

James looked around at the people milling around. He remembered some of the faces from last year's tournament, others yet were foreign to him. James noticed K'hare, he remembered him from last year, storm off after seeing some piece of paper that he dropped in his efforts to storm out of the room. James slid his way through the crowd and picked it up. It was a picture of K'hare with Romulan ears...interesting. James looked around at the crowd and found Admiral Durkis. He waded his way over.

ON:

As roS looked around trying to find someone willing to head off to do some praticing he noticed a Lt moving tward the Admiral Durkis who was wearing a patch indicating he was from the USS Saturn.

His stay on the USS Saturn had not been the most pleasant time in his life and out of curiosity he edged tward the Lt. to see if he knew the guy.

Off:

roS was "Expelled from Starfleet for striking a superior officer." and his previous ship was the USS Saturn.

K'Hare:  Note this was 3 years ago in character and it is made up history to add background to roS.  roS never actually simmed on the Saturn but feel free to remember his as a stereotypical Klingon and treat his as such.  (:}
