OOC: As a long term pet store employee, and a devote nature show watcher, here’s my two (informed) cents… Reptiles are a very primitive creature with primitive brains. They cannot sense or detect DNA. DNA is a scent-free molecule composed of several amino acids and retained within cell walls. It is highly undetectable by normal means--thus the new CSI programs where they run all sorts of lab tests to unravel its secrets. Reptiles hunt for their food in one of two ways, through movement of their prey or by detecting a heat source emitted from their prey. That is why it is a very bad idea to hold onto the mouse you’re trying to feed to the snake--you risk being bit because your hand is within striking distance. You can also read/watch Jurassic Park for further evidence. The characters are encouraged to remain still when they are being hunted by the T Rex. All mammals emit some form of a pheromone, not necessarily all animals though. This helps the others in their species recognize when to court and when to stay away. Not all mammals are as receptive to pheromones as others… For instance, humans are fairly bad at it, whereas dogs thrive on all sorts of smells. Humans emit a plethora of smells through sweat, and dogs are really good at picking that up (think bloodhounds). In conclusion, DNA doesn’t stink, and reptiles aren’t very smart.
