The obsidian bat'leth glinted in the harsh lighting of the competition arena. It's black body stood out on the wall from the standard silver blades of most of the bat'leths. It was a unique piece, made on Earth by a fine craftsman. Carefully inscribed on the blade was a lone name, one that both named the blade's owner and his family, so to speak.

James looked up at his blade and carefully removed it from the wall. As he held it in his hand all the troubles of the past few days melted out through his hands into the smooth blackened metal of the blade. It was time, he thought.

He looked above where his bat'leth had been located to put a name to who he would be facing this first round in the tournament. Last year it had been a Klingon, arrogant over the fact that he was facing a Starfleet Doctor,

But James had put him in his place. That was something James was hoping for again this year. Of all the entrants he was the only to be bearing a Caduceus, the two snakes wrapped around the winged pole. This year James hoped to be the snake this year, slithering his way through the tournament until he reached his ultimate goal, the final four competitors. This year he would not be swept under the rug.

He ran his hand over the blade. Today James' instrument would not be the tricorder, dermal regenerator or hypospray...today his bat'leth would the his laser scalpel in his skillful hands. He smiled and made his way to the ring.

He stepped up in the ring and got his first glimpse of his opponent, a jittery Ensign wearing a yellow Fleet uniform. Probably security, James thought. James clasped his hands to his blade and bowed to the man before him. The ensign nervously bowed back. James straightened up and spaced his feet out, his bat'leth at the ready. The ensign followed suit.

The judge signaled the ready and then the beginning of the match. The ensign quickly rushed at James, lifting his blade above his head.  As the blade came crashing down as the ensign continued forward James rolled on his shoulder across the ring and swung the handle end of his blade at his opponent's ankles. He hit the ensign hard, causing him to trip up. As the ensign went down, James jumped up and got back to the ready. The ensign skidded a few feet before stopping. He stood up and turned to face James.

James smiled at him and beckoned him to come again. The ensign steped forward and made a quick series of left and right attacks. James parried them and hooked his blade into the gaps of his opponents. He noticed they were locked together. Before the ensign could react James yanked his blade toward his knees, causing the ensigh to fall foward, due to holding his arms stiff.

James brought his knee up to meet the young man's face. As his knee connected he felt his bat'leth lost tension. He lifted it up, his opponent's blade still locked to his. He raised it above his head in victory. He then reached down and helped the ensign to his feet, handing him back his blade.

"Good fight..." James thought about it for a second. "Next time try to be more fluid in your movements...you're much too stiff." He smiled at the young man who smiled his thanks back. With that, James went back to the wall and wiped down his weapon. He hung it on the wall on the next rung. He had advanced.
