roS vs Ki’rith (NPC)
« on: Feb 15th, 2005, 11:07pm »

roS sat at the bar after his match in a very grumpy mood.  His match had not gone at all as he had hoped despite all his training over the last year.  He had worked hard but it seems that he needed to double or triple his efforts if he was going to be able to hold his own against a true master of the batleth.  His father would NOT have been happy at his performance.  If it hadn’t been for the interference that took place he would not have won his match.  His match had been nothing but a joke…

*** fade to 30 minutes before ***

roS was excited and practically jumped out of bed when the alarm went off in the morning. This would be his first match ever using the Batleth and he wanted to prove to K’Hare and be`eQaraH that he had not wasted their collective time and effort.

roS got up and first checked his armor over very carefully.  He made sure that everything was oiled and that each strap and catch worked perfectly so that he would have no reason to complain and so that he didn’t look the fool when representing their ship.

According to the computer his first match was against Ki’rith of the house T’urlok and that this warrior held the rank of yaS wa'Dich on the ship IKS targh'Iw.

Humm… not good… that meant he was most likely very good with a Batleth!  Oh well, it couldn’t be helped at this point.  Focus on what he had been taught and try to fight with honor.

That in mind roS headed out to the arena to get his Batleth and to warm up before his match.  He was going to be early so he could watch a few match’s to pick up some pointers if possible.

…..

The area was not too packed since these were just the early matches.  No problem moving around and watching.  Some of these warriors were just plain amazing to watch and looked to be twice as much fun to actually fight.

As the time of his bout came closer he headed over to where it was to take place stopping off to pick up the Batleth that qap had given to him.  He just looked at the symbol of the house Satian on the blade thinking back to how he had acquired this fine weapon… its too bad that qap never got the chance to really do much training with him before he died.

It didn’t take roS long to arrive at the ring where he was to fight and he spent the rest of his time warming up and looking around in the hope of spotting his up coming opponent.

After a while he spotted an older warrior with many battle scars standing near the ring looking at him with what could only be termed *amusement*.  After a quick glance behind himself roS was forced to accept the idea that this must be his opponent and that he was indeed humored by roS’s looks.

Once the older warrior was sure that roS was aware of him he walked over to stand in front of roS to look him up and down before snorting in amusement.  “This must be your first match… you are neither injured nor very skilled from the looks of how you are holding your Batleth.  I will try not to “injure” you oh mighty warrior as K’Hare would not be please with me if I chopped you in two.”

roS couldn’t help his reaction… he puffed up and glared at this warrior with all the pride and anger he could project.  “I can take care of myself oh he of long tooth and short bad breath.”

Ki’rith just looked at him for a second before leaning his head back to laugh and then to slap roS on the back hard enough that roS thought his back had broken.  “Ahh… its good to see that K’Hare has indeed taught you… you show spunk pup!  Come, let’s enter the ring and have some fun and see if K’Hare’s teachings extend to the batleth as well as your mouth.”

With that Ki’rith moved to enter the ring and move to his place to await the judges.

roS followed behind him his mind in a coil of confusion.  Here he was ready to fight and his opponent found him funny… not even worthy of respect!  This made roS grind his teeth and growl softly under his breath.  He would show this old wind bag just how funny he was once this match started.

Once he was in position the judges came forward and explained the rules and then stepped back.  Before the judge could blow his whistle about five klingons pushed their way to the front of the light crowd and started elbowing each other and staring at Ki’rith before laughing.

One took a swig from his mug, loudly burped, and said “look… it’s a targh herder… I didn’t know they left such fight at these events!  Hey herder… it’s not a targh in there with you… try not to mate with it!

The others with him laughed at his crude insult just as the judge blew his whistle for the match to begin.

That was when roS’s grand designs to teach Ki’rith that he was not someone to laugh at went out the air lock.

Ki’rith was obviously angry at the insults thrown at him and wanted to quickly end the match.

roS got to take all of one step forward before he was fighting for all he was worth just to keep his batleth and his head where they started the match…  Ki’rith batleth seemed to came at him from every angle.  High, low, middle and everything in between.  roS desperately fought to keep his batleth moving fast enough to block this storm of attacks.

The older warrior seemed to be everywhere at once raining blows down on roS. Time after time roS would just barely block the most recent attack only to find himself desperately blocking yet again.

Forget attacking… he didn’t even have the time to think much less attack!    The blows from Ki’rith were blinding in there speed and ros was gasping for breath after only a few minutes.  Yet Ki’rith barely seemed to have broken a sweat and was more focused on the klingons outside the ring then on roS himself.

After yet another set of whirlwind attacks roS was sent staggering to his knees from a massive overhand attack from Ki’rith and roS’s weapon nearly flew from his hands when Ki’rith was struck by something thrown from outside the ring.

The judge quickly stepped in and kicked the object aside and the offender was caught and hauled away by security.  He didn’t go quietly and it took 4 security personnel to pacify the drunk klingon.

roS used the interruption to catch his breath and rolled to the side to keep the judge between him and his superior opponent.  His opponent nodded and smiled… it seemed he approved of the makeshift tactic.

The other klingons in the group stood around and yelled encouragement to the unlucky klingon as he struggled with the security force.  roS used every second to recover before the judge turned around and gestured for him to get up.

Ki’rith quickly assumed his position but it was obvious that his mind was no longer on the match.

The judge stepped out of the ring roS again found himself on the defensive.  Even with his mind elsewhere Ki’rith was clearly beating the stuffing out of roS.  In less then 30 seconds roS was bleeding from six or seven small cuts and punctures and felt lucky that they were only minor!  He had blood leaking out of him from every side of his body in tiny rivulets down his armor and onto the ring floor.

roS took a rapid step back in a desperate attempt to get room and time to take the fight to Ki’rith but as he moved something flew past him and hit Ki’rith in the face.  It didn’t do any direct damage but the object was a mug full of bloodwine and it splashed into his eyes blinding him for a few seconds before he could wipe it away.

roS knew that if he attacked that he most likely could have bashed  Ki’rith batleth from his hand in the instant he was blinded… but roS didn’t… he backed up and waited for Ki’rith to recover.

As the judge dealt with this second interruption, Ki’rith looked over at roS.

It seems that K’Hare has taught you will pup… you fight with honor.

roS bared his teeth is a half snarl and half grin… “I am not a pup… I am still standing…” it would have sounded much better if he hadn’t been panting for breath when he said it… hell.. he sounded like a puppy!

Ki’rith nodded and smiled… “perhaps pup… but I am not tired… are you?”

Again the judge yelled out for them to continue or both lose after yet another klingon had been hauled off and whistled for them to continue but this time they didn’t even get to move before another mug came flying out of the crowd to slam into Ki’rith face.

This time it actually knocked him down as the mug was full and thrown as hard as the attacker could hurl it from outside the ring.  Blood mixed with bloodwine to flow into Ki’rith eyes as he slowly climbed back to his feet.  From his good eye he could barely see that roS had again stepped back to allow him time to recover.

This time security descended on the spot in mass but even then they were too late as friends of Ki’rith jumped the offenders and started pounded them into the deck.  Security had a nasty time sorting out who had done what and just decided to take all of them to the brig.

The judge, angry, whistled for the match to continue and Ki’rith moved forward as if to attack but at the last second fumbled with his batleth when he tried to wipe blood and wine from his eyes. To everyone’s shock Ki’rith slipped at that very second on some blood and fell to his knees losing his hold on his batleth and dropped it to the ring floor.

roS and the judge just stood looking at the batleth for a good 3 seconds before it dawned on them that the match was over.  And he was sure he had seen something no one else had.

*** fade to present ***

roS just sat there at the bar… angry that his match should have ended with him winning when it was clear to him and anyone watching that he should have lost.  To win due to luck was not a win.

As he sat he heard a voice from behind him and turned to find Ki’rith standing there with a bandage over his eye.

Ki’rith: You fought with honor roS… K’Hare has taught you well.

roS: You had me beat… you knew it… everyone knew it… why did you throw the match?

Ki’rith: Because with this *touching his eye* I could not fight as I should;  I would have been forced to forfeit my next match.  Since you fought with such honor I decided that you should fight for both of us.

With that Ki’rith waved at the bartender and two bloodwines were set down.  “Now, pup, drink with me and tell me a story about K’Hare.  It’s been too long since I served with him.”

ON:

I don't see that I did that well... he let me win.

If those jerks hadn't harrassed him and thrown that mug into his face he would have beaten me.

All I did was get a lot of pratice at defending myself.  I never even managed to attack him!

Where is the glory and honor in saying "I won because I ducked faster then he could swing" ?

*roS stopped at this point and just slumpped looking depressed as hell*

"Losing to a superior opponent is not a loss."

K'Hare waved for a drink and sat down.  "What training you have enabled you to defend as you did.  You should be proud of that.  He is a tough opponent.  At the time, when we served together, I could rarely beat him."

He took a drink and continued.  "You could have taken the easy route, tried to use an illegal move, attack him while he was distracted.  On the battlefield, a mine goes off and blinds your opponent for just a moment... if you don't kill him you are a fool.  If you win because random events aided you, what of it?  There you must win for the Empire, for your House, four yourself.  But your instinct should always to be honorable... and yours was.  For many, this is the only reason to participate in an event such as this."

He drained his cup.  "roS, he had other concerns but he wanted to test himself.  He could have beaten you in the first moment... he is that good."  K'Hare saw the objection rising in the younger Klingon.  "No, don't be offended.  He was attacking, waiting for your first mistake.  When you made it, he would have taken advantage.  You may have seen the fight as you defending, but you never made a mistake in that defense.  And you choose not to take advantage when you were facing loss or dishonor.  That gave you his respect, something I would value more than a trophy."

K'Hare got up and walked off to let the student think and to celebrate his win when the realization hit him.  He may not have been better than his opponent, but it was his actions that gave him the win.
