K'Hare went to the bar right as the mood of the station turned, that time right after when the more serious individuals go to their quarters for a good nights sleep.

This night was his vacation, the respite he had planned.  He'd already choosen the best bar stool and he was determined to get it.  This early, that wasn't a problem.  Stage 1, complete.

The next step of his plan was to get in the mood.  He ordered a half dozen bloodwines and drank two down.  A good start.  Now he had enough to keep talking without going dry.  Stage 2 complete.

Finally, he needed a foe.  K'Hare searched the bar.  No one worthy, but they would be here.  Tauvits, ta'pez, ... it didn't matter.  Someone would show up and he was ready.

Verghese entered the bar, looking to both sides. It had been a long day - even longer without even a drop of bloodwine all day long. Although he was feeling mostly allright, he still didn't want to have much alcohol just yet.

Besides, the feeling of having a clear mind was refreshing for once, and the lack of a headache tomorrow would be welcome for once.

Looking around the bar, he spotted K'hare sitting on one of the bar stools. Judging from his expression however, Verghese re-considered disturbing him. Besides, Verghese was here for dinner and a bit of relaxation. Work-related activities were far from his mind right now.

Rather than go sit right next to K'hare, Verghese took one of the seats nearby and ordered some food. Soon, either Tapez or the others would be here, and it was going to be some show, at the least.

ON:

Tauvits had, tonight, decided on finding himself suitable food before settling down to drink. As his personal agreement was, he couldn't just march around acting like this was a holiday when he had matters to attend to. So he'd eaten in his quarters, intently studying papers regarding Adrian Forrest, and assembling the plan that had begun to form in his head that afternoon. With a little luck, success would mean minimal chaos, and disruption was the last thing he wanted to cause.

So he allowed himself a break, walking into the bar and ordering himself a whole bottle of whiskey and a few glasses, intending, as with the other night, to share the drink as much as consuming it himself, talking to anyone who'd bother giving him the time of day.

Therefore he hadn't really expected to see K'Hare at a table with an army of tankards of bloodwine about him, and the air of someone intending to work their way through at least another few regiments before the night was done. It did, however, prompt him to consider the other plan he had to deal with, for although his intent was present, actually carrying through with it would be a different sort of challenge.

So he picked up the bottle of whiskey, and just the one glass, and meandered over to where K'Hare sat, approaching from the front so as to make his arrival obviously visible.

"Mind if I join you, mate? Only I find it hard to believe we've had a couple of days here and only a brief chat yesterday. No debates about human mating habits or Klingon honour or anything, and you know it's not a tournament without any of them." Tauvits grinned, moving to sit down without even waiting for a response. "And besides, I'd been hoping to talk to you for the last couple of days anyway. Got a few concerns I think you might be able to help me with."

Actually, he is at the bar.  He specifically picked a spot where he could taunt the maximum number of people and pace around some.

ON:

"Ah, Tauvits, my fine Bolian friend!"

He was about to order something for his blue buddy when he noticed he came prepared.

"Of course, of course."  K'Hare's stance stayed open and boisterous, but as soon as he heard the words, his volume dropped quickly.  "A little early to have a private conversation in public.  How serious are these concerns?"

Gah, I confused myself. Tauvits was going to get a table then go bug K'Hare, then I realised he'd need a drink, so he went to the bar, and then magically K'Hare had moved to a table in my head. Stupid head.

ON:

Tauvits poured himself a generous glass of whiskey, and sipped it idly. "It's serious, from my perspective, but nothing that needs to be kept hush-hush. Just a bit of family mess that you might be able to help me with."

He waved a hand dismissively, not quite willing to dive into the discussion so bluntly. If nothing else, it would be rude to just march up to K'Hare after a year and demand a rather large favour. He owed him at least a few minutes of banter before getting down to business. "Still, it is not so urgent that we must disappear to a dark corner immediately without catching up. How's your station? Still in one piece? I was talking to one of your lads the other day, S'ol - the lad's in a bit of a state over losing his match, too, might need some perking up over that - and he seemed to speak highly of the little 'study-group' you're running over there. It sounds... most interesting." He gave an innocently curious smile which he was sure wouldn't be taken at face value.

James had an odd smile about him as he entered the bar, feeling somewhat villified. He had learned quite a bit and had found an opportunity to meditate over what he had learned about his upcoming opponent before heading back to the bar.

James looked around. There wern't too many people and the only thing of note James noticed so far was the Andorian and K'hare sitting at the bar, a dozen tankards of what he assumed to be bloodwine and a bottle of whiskey between them. James sat a few stools down from them and got the bartender's attention.

"What can I get'cha?" the man inquired as he wiped a glass.

James thought about it for a second. "Can I get a cup of hot green tea?" The bartender looked at him a little oddly. "Trying to cut back on the booze, keep a clear mind for the tournament you know?"

He didn't care if it had worked or not, he wanted a cup of tea. The bartender was happy to oblige and James sipped at his tea and made no effort to hide the fact that he was somewhat interested in what the Klingon and Andorian had to say.

K'Hare nodded.  "Both So'l and roS were upset by their performance but how many other cadets are even here?  I will have to remind them that the experience and getting through it will make them stronger."

He took a long drink from his bloodwine and then, without asking, grabbed the bottle and put an inch into a glass and 'sipped' about half.  Before commenting he frowned at it.  "This is better than the tuber based drink I have had.  It has more flavors.  It is grain based and aged, yes?"  K'Hare finished the glass and considered the drink.  "Surprisingly subtle mixture of flavors.  The drink was aged in some sort of wooden barrel.  I am surprised the human palette developed such a thing."

He picked up a bloodwine.  "The academy is going surprisingly well.  My executive officer seems to have a knack for teaching, or perhaps it is torture, that she never realized."

ON: XFY Corridors

It had been a very relaxing time for the Klingon female.  She had renewed a couple of friendships with warriors that she had not seen in all the years she was 'gone'.  She had eaten and drank some of the best food, bloodwine and wornagh in recent memory.  She had gotten to finally visit an armorer and had a set made and fitted.  She was finally back in Klingon armor.  No cleavage hole, long fur sleeves, all black... it felt perfect.  Her new spiked boots fit perfectly, she had gotten a weapons belt and her Daqtagh, the only weapon she had managed to keep, along with her life, was at her side.

She felt like a warrior again.  Not that she held any ill will toward the Empire for her last assignment, it was true that she had been the only Klingon who could have done it.  It was not often that one saw a .. what had that Starfleet Admiral called her as a joke...?  Ah yes.. a pygmy Klingon.

She had come to term with the fact that she was height challenged, there was no avoiding the fact that without her boots on she stood a mere 5 feet and 3 inches, the boots added a couple of inches, but they did not help much.  She could even laugh about her challenge now, and when others of her species poked fun at her she would turn it back on them either by pointing out their physical flaws in a more humorous way, or by besting them in some contest that sounded easy to them, until they tried to do it in their huge bodies.

And so she approached what she had heard was the best bar on the station, even though she had been to busy visiting Klingon ships and catching up with her friends, to have visited it before tonight.

She had been a HoD, but now she was rankless.  A state she had no problem with.  She had a house, but all of them but her were gone, killed in one battle or another.

The house had been small and had, had no power, and so she claimed only to be the daughter of Itlh'Sa, a father who once it was known that she would be a 'stunted runt' would have nothing more to do with her, not matter how well she proved herself.  It was an old wound that had scarred over years ago.  It did not pain her anymore.

She entered the bar and glanced around.  Her eyes lit on the Klingon with several mugs in front of him, K'Hare, the one with Romulan blood, he was talking to a blue person, she could not quite work out exactly what sort of blue person he was, but that was fine.

She moved to the bar and ordered a bottle of wornagh which was quickly handed over.  She moved toward a table against a wall but with a commanding view of the room.  She sat with her back to the wall and smacked the bottle top on the table, breaking it off.

She sniffed the contents and then took a hearty swig from the jagged edge, the alcohol stinging in the small cuts the top made to her lips as she drank.  wornagh was always a little better when it was tempered by a bit of the drinker's own blood.

She leaned back and kicked her booted feet up on an empty chair and commenced watching things happen.

"Teaching is torture. Take it from a former Academy Instructor." Tauvits grinned, and sipped on his whiskey happily. "And yeah, it's a good drink. This isn't even one of the finest I've tasted - I've got plenty in my cellar back in Northumberland, you should really drop by if you ever come to Earth. Doesn't matter if I'm there or not, bug my sister or cousin if they're around and tell them I said you could have keys to the cellar. Some of the finest Scottish malts down there. Nicked from across the border for over a thousand years." The last part was more of an amused chuckle to himself, and he shook his head.

"But yes, I'd talk to your lads. It doesn't do them any good to mope. At the end of the day, it's just a tournament, not life or death. And it's good to hear the Academy's going well. I'd have figured most of your lads would have been ripped to shreds, in one way or another, by Klingon society. It's just as well they've got you looking after them." Tauvits' subtlety dropped a notch or two, and he eyed K'Hare cautiously as he poured himself another glass of whiskey.

"I haven't been stuck with them for several months like I have last year. Absence makes the heart grow fonder." Tauvits smirked a little. "No, my cousin Michael is a fool, craving a worthless title so he may pretend that he has achieved something in his life. Argument is inevitable when the two of us meet. His son, Will, fortunately takes more after my father than my uncle, his grandfather. He's one of the few of that side of my family I can stand."

He leaned back in his chair, swirling his whiskey about in the tumbler idly, his voice and expression growing distant. "My sister, Lara... or rather, my half-sister, I've always been close to. And then there's Clare. My daughter. Who I never seem to have managed to factor into my life enough. She's only been affected by the bad side of being my daughter, rather than the good side I'd love to provide." He sighed faintly, glancing at an invisible spot over to the side that he wasn't actually seeing, and if he had been thinking more clearly he would have been annoyed at himself at how easily K'Hare had pressed him to show his hand, intentionally or otherwise.

K'Hare took a drink and replied.  "I understand the conflict between loyalty to your relatives while you dislike them.. the concept at least.  In my adult life I have had no relatives in the human sense of the word." He took another drink thinking about the child who in some sense made that a lie.

"You know there is an old Klingon tradition, one that most Houses no longer follow, that leadership falls to a nephew.  This was during a more sexist time of course, but it was the son of one of your siblings, preferably a sister, that followed you, not one of your own.  Interesting that your cousin is like your father yet you do not like your uncle."

K'Hare took another drink and then turned to Tauvits.  "You mentioned your daughter last year and I told you then to make her your priority.  Here it is, a year later, and again you lament that you have not done your best with her.  Tauvits, the past is gone but you are now responsible for each action from today on.  We should not have this conversation again next year.  You must do what is right for her... and I don't need to tell you that.  You already know it."

James took another sip of his hot tea. The two were talking about some sort of family issue with Tauvits and his cousin, something that was always an issue. Some family member messed things up, and what James wouldn't give to have someone in his family to just mess things up, if not be proud of him. He looked down at his tea and took another sip. He beckoned the barkeep over.

"What can I getcha' now?" the bartender inquired, eyeing the now empty glass of tea.

"Another tea for me," James said, sliding his cup across the bar, "and a bourbon for those two over there," gesturing to K'Hare and Tauvits.

James smiled. "If you can't meditate...inebriate," he muttered, taking a sip of his new cup of tea and staring into the cup, considering.

Although Verghese wasn't directly looking at K'hare and Tauvits, he was still close enough to make out most of their conversation. His own gaze was on the food in front of him, but his attention never wavered from the two.

Out of the corner of his eye however, he did notice the doctor come in and take a table nearby. He ordered a drink and then ordered a few more for the other two.

Verghese simply glanced over to the doctor, giving a slight nod before continuing to observe the conversation.

"I have been with my daughter in the past year, more than in perhaps the last eight years, since I lived on Earth. It's been... an improvement. But not quite enough." Tauvits sighed, scrubbing his face with his hands, and sipped on more whiskey. His cool, calm demeanour had rapidly begun to fall apart with this topic of conversation. "But I can't just give up all I'm doing now and go back to Earth to spend more time with her. I'm in the middle of something too important for that. And I can't bring her along. It's... it's too dangerous."

Tauvits poured himself yet more whiskey. "I have angered many, many people. In Starfleet, without, people who are friends of my friends, and so forth. Many of them would like to see my head on a pike. However, they cannot always catch me. I have my own ship these days, and it is not so simple as asking Starfleet where I will be next to lie in wait for me." Bitterness crept into his voice as he considered how easily Forrest had sold him out last time. "Even if they can catch me, I am not defenceless. They all know this. So they have different ways of getting at me. Primarily, family."

He downed this next glass of whiskey without celebration. "My sister can fend for herself. She's JAG, she spends her time in places with more security than anywhere else in the galaxy. And she'd rain down living hell on anyone who tried to get at her anyway. My dislike for my cousin is well-documented, nobody considers him to be a point of leverage. And that leaves... my daughter. Who I would like to have some semblance of a normal life, and so I don't tell her to go underground surrounded by a hundred security guards. Yet every day she lives her 'normal' life on Earth, she is further at risk..."

He reached for the whiskey bottle, reaching for yet more alcohol, his plans of remaining in perfect control and just enjoying a few drinks rapidly dissipating as he faced this fear he'd shoved aside for a day. "I cannot protect her myself. Not at the expense of something even greater. And... and so I am here to ask you, my friend, for a favour."

Any of the light, joking atmosphere about him was gone, as was any of the furtive, curious secrecy of before. Now his expression was simply earnest, sincere, and even a little desperate as he looked K'Hare in the eye.
