Title: A bite to eat
Post by KentraDonrav on Feb 7th, 2006, 1:04pm

On:

[Serenity Base, Promenade]

After taking advantage of the guest quarters she'd been provided Kentra Donrav headed to the station's main public space, lined with shops and restaurants.  Changed and wearing a fresh uniform she meandered almost randomly through the station taking in the sights.

The station was filled with Klingons, and she enjoyed watching the stations inhabitants having to deal with the Klingons.  She found a small restaurant that seemed to have given up their typical menu in favour of a Klingon menu.  The trill let out a heavy sigh.  Denax, her previous host, had always loved Klingon food but she just could not find the stomach to eat it.  She approached a waiter, a Bajoran, "Excuse me, do you have anything besides Klingon food?"

He nodded, "We have our usual menu as well, we serve Bajoran dishes."

The trill nodded, and took a seat at a large empty table.  She ordered her meal and was brought a bottle of Bajoran rice wine.  She filled her glass and sat back and relaxed.

<< Promenade – Serenity Base >>

John curled his hands in to fists and out again making his hands rest flat against his sides, having all these people on board his station upsetting the balance was bad enough to have people like Duerkes going over his head.

Fighting the urge to scream John decided that he should find something else to occupy his mind for a short time, a spot of lunch would help him calm down.

Looking around for the nearest eatery he changed course to enter it.

The first think he noticed up on entering was the abundance of Klingon’s, he smiled as he realised it would allow him to indulge in something he hadn’t indulged in for a while. Despite his dislike of the Klingon people he found himself unable to fault their food.

As he moved to sit down he noticed something out of place, on one of the tables tucked away he could see a female Trill enjoying a meal. After placing his order with the nearest waiter (Being station CO did afford him some luxuries, like being able to queue jump when necessary) he walked over to introduce himself.

Maybe getting to know one of his guests would make him less inclined to hate them all?

“Do you mind if I sit down?” He spoke the words as he fell in to the seat opposite the Trill, waiting for permission wasn’t really on his agenda today. Smiling he said “Vice Admiral Jefferson, and you would be?”

Kentra looked up a bit surprised then smiled, "Vice Admiral?  Well that's a lot of collar pips to polish in the morning."  She exended her hand, "Lieutenant Junior Grade Kentra Donrav.  I'm here for the tournament, which I take it most of the other people here are as well."

She called for another glass, which was delivered.  She poured the Admiral a glass of the Bajoran rice wine she had been drinking, "It's quite nice, refreshing.  Should be a nice counter-point to that horrid food you're about to eat."

"So Admiral what are you doing on the station?  Tournement as well?"

OOC Posted under the wrong account to begin with apparently (Thank you for the nod Tappy ;))

John laughed, it was true what they said, laughter was the best medicine. He smiled as he replied "Well, I suspose I would be running my station and hosting the competition" he laughed once more and leaned in closer "You know, some folks might say checking up on your location before you get there would be a good thing"

He took a sip of the rice wine, it wasn't exactly to his tastes but he could stomach it until his bitter arrived.

"I take it your a competitor?" he said once he had calmed down enough not to laugh

"Oh I find knowing everything takes the fun out of it," Kentra smiled, "besides I was too busy studying the Tholian language to really memorize the entire crew manifest for Serenity Base.  No offense sir."

John's smile stayed fixed in place, even if internally he grimaced "The station's CO is hardly the entire manifest" he said trying to keep his voice jolly.

"Besides, what use is the Tholian language to anyone?"

OFF

OOC Yeah, John's got evil thoughts inside.

"Well I would imagine it's quite helpful to tholians.  I know learning languages isn't that popular since the universal translator became so ubiqutious but I've been doing it for a long time.  It's how I keep myself occupied, learning languages and studying other cultures," she said.

"Anyway sir I apologize for not knowing your name, or position," Kentra said, "I didn't realize that such protocal was important at a tournament like this."

"And yes I'm a competitor, it should be interesting.  Denax Donrav, my previous host, used to be quite good with a bet'leth.  Since then it's been hard to adjust to trying to perform bet'leth with a smaller, female host."

"Ah, I have heard that being a joined trill is difficult" John took another drink of the rice wine "Although I can't say I've had much experience with Trill's myself"

"Perhaps you'll be going up against Serenity's champion" he smiled "If you do It will be you I cheer for" John's smile stayed in place but he didn't elaborate on his comment.

"Difficult?  I suppose," Kentra mused for a second, "but not any more than any other race has their own difficulties.  I mean to only live one life time seems to be difficult too, as would supressing your emotions, or having to bump off your superiors to advance in rank."

She shrugged, "I've sort of figured out that everyone has their own difficulties.  Mine are fairly minimal, besides I'm just here for fun.  I have no expectations of winning the tournement, but it was a way to get off my ship and sort of get in touch with Donrav's previous host in a unique way."

"Truth is I'm actually a pacifist, so violence is generally abhorent to me," she said.  She considered his comment for a second, "Why would you want me to beat your station's champion?  Are you not on good terms?"

OOC Ah, the crux of a little sub plot - thank you for asking the question

ON

John laughed "Actually, I like him quite a lot. I just see that he could do with being knocked to the mat by life, he's far too" he paused as he searched for the words to use "arrogant, he needs to learn a lesson only  a few hard knocks will teach him."

"I'm sure if he saw you he would think himself 100 times better than you, despite his lack of experience."

"Despite your new host, I'm sure you'll do just fine"

Kentra laughed, "Ah I've met a few people like that.  And frankly this is a Klingon sport, it attracts people wtih a healthy ego.  Denax used to love Klingons, married one and they had a son.  Me, I perfer humans."

"I'm sure I'll do okay, but I'm not too worried either way.  I don't subscribe to Klingon codes of honour, but obviously I don't want to make a fool out of myself," she shrugged, "I don't know I just want to fight honestly and do as well as I can."

"But come on do you really see a young small trill woman winning this contest?"

John laughed again, "You would be surprised what I've seen in my life Lieutenant, I don't think coming here with expections that low will help if fate decides to deal you a good hand."

He drained the rice wine "I've seen Klingon warriors laid low by a single lucky strike" he set the cup down "Seeing you win wouldn't be that amazing in the grand scheme of things"

Kentra laughed taking another drink, "It is true, more astounding things have happened.  However I won't be too disappointed if it does not.  I have seen many amazing things in my life, but most often it is not the unlikely that happens, but the very likely."

"How about yourself, does the job of hosting the tournament not allow you to participate?  You look like you're still in good shape sir, you might be able to make it a few rounds," Kentra said.

John's face darkened momentarily as bits of his history floated to the forefront of his mind. Life had not been easy for him, having his flight status pulled at an early age.

He picked the empty cup up and stared in to it for a few moments before replying.

"When I graduated I was a fighter pilot, with all the ego that goes with it"

John went silent once again, it was almost as if each word brought back a physical manifestation of the pain he had gone through.

"During the first Cardiassian war I was shot down, it was a one in a million shot by some Cardie" he paused again turning the thoughts over in his head "Basically I broke almost every bone and organ in my body, the doc's put me back together but it was obvious I could never fly again with all my augmentations"

"So, betleH fighting is out of the question for me most days. I just can't keep up with it"

John was interupted by the sound of his comm badge, turning away slightly he answered it "Jefferson here"

"Ops sir, we thought you might like to know K'Hare totlh is arriving"

Jefferson grunted "Thank you ops, please inform Mister Taylor and have him meet the totlh, Jefferson out"

He smiled to Kentra as he turned back "So anyway why else would a fighter jock take a desk job like mine?"

Kentra listened to the Admiral's story in silence.  He reminded her of Joker, the marine fighter pilot that she served with on the Laffey and to everyone's great surprise, including their own, she had ended up in love with.  They had left on bad terms, because fighter pilots were a tough breed to get to commit to anything long term since they tended only to live in the moment.

She felt a flash of envy, wishing that Joker would be forced into a desk job, and then felt guilty for wanting him to give up something that he clearly was so devoted to.  Devoted more than her, sadly.

She wanted to offer sympathy, but she was sure he had probably received more than enough of that.  Instead she grinned, "Does the work for your security department go up with so many Klingons on the station?"

John smiled as he replied "No, Klingon's are predictable. Security is doing more work with more Human's onboard, they're the unpredictable buggers"

"They may be predictable," Kentra mused, "but when you have five large Klingons trying to avenge their honour after a turn at the daboo tables it's not always an easy thing to stop."

"You're looking at someone who had to plan a Klingon wedding when Denax, my previous host, married a Klingon woman," she said, "it made human weddings look positively Vulcan in comparison.  We actually had an honour challenge during the ceremony, which was inconvenient since I had to carry my bride over a corpse."

"Still if your security team is good, they'll just stay out of the way until the Klingons start harassing the non-Klingons."

She sipped her wine, "Why did you want the station to host this?"

OOC Notice, the correct account first time ;D

ON

"I didn't actually" John paused again as he considered his words "Starfleet decided that Serenity's Status made it a good choice for this event this year. I believe they exerted some influence to ensure Serenity was chosen"

He shrugged "They seem to think it will impress the ambassadors on the station, when actually most of them have left for the duration of the competition. Only my Ferengi Ambassador remains around on the station" he leaned forward conspiritorially "I believe he's trying to make a profit from all and sundry, I'd advise keeping out of his way"

"Human inuit peoples used to have a hundred different words for snow," Kentra said, "I think Ferengi have twice that many for profit.  I'll try to avoid him, wouldn't want it to look like I had help fixing the matches if I won."

She chuckled, "I can see though why this wouldn't be the event for ambassadors.  Though I'm sure nobody is going to start an intergalactic war."

"Do you like serving on a starbase?  Or would you like to serve on a starship?"

Title: Re: A bite to eat

"Starships definitely" John sighed "one in particular, before this I was commanding officer of the Carrier Class USS Faraday, not a day goes by when I don't miss being at the conn."

He waved his arm around "Sure Serenity is big, but it doesn't go very far"

"How about you?"

Kentra smiled, "I'm just enjoying what life is throwing at me.  Maybe one day I'll end up in command, but it would have to be a science ship, or a medical ship.  I'm a committed pacifist, I won't carry a phaser, I don't take part in any away missions where violence could be used.  I wouldn't make a good captain if the ship had to deal with someone unfriendly."

Title: Re: A bite to eat

John raised an eyebrow "A commited pacifist at the betleH competition? Are you pulling my leg?"

'What is the world coming to' he thought to himself as he waited for a reply 'what else will life throw at me?'

"Well the way I look at it I have no intention of harming anyone.  I am not fighting in anger, or to do violence," Lieutenant Donrav said, "I look at it more like ballet or a sport like Artillian polo.  It's about form and motion, not about blood and fear."

She shrugged, "That's just how I see it.  If this were real combat, then I would not be taking part.  Does that make any sense?"

Title: Re: A bite to eat

'No not at all' thought John to himself 'but trying to explain why I think that would just mean revealing a little too much about myself'

He nodded to Kentra "Yes, I think I do, it's a strange outlook but it's logical"

Looking at his chronometer he realised he had to get moving, his food hadn't even arrived yet but he was getting late for a meeting.

"I'm sorry, I have to get going. I have a meeting to attend before the opening ceremony and a few other people too see. Thank you for the chat, I hope you do well in the competition"
