Title: What's new girl thingy cat?
Post by Taylor on Feb 11th, 2006, 9:46am

OOC Looks like the word censor got my topic name  ;D

ON

Dan clapped K'Hare on the arm once to congratulate him on his remarks before he jumped down from the podium, only his friendship with the totlh had allowed him to be so close to the opening. In the past day he hadn't had a chance to speak to Jackie, he felt somewhat rotten kidnapping her or catnapping? He chuckled to himself at the thought and then leaving her to fend for herself on the station.

Still, maybe she did need some time like that to force her to stand on her own two feet. Something central to being a TFCO.

He found her close to the podium staring in to the middle distance, he had to tap her on the arm before she even registered his arrival.

"Jackie? What did you think of K'Hare's speech?"

OOC: At least we know the censor works ;)

ON:
Jackie’s tail flickered from side to side as she listened to the Rear Admiral Duerkes’ opening speech. The Caitian looked around the main floor, regarding the competitors. A number of them were Klingon, yet a rather decent number of those competing were not Klingon at all. Jackie wasn’t sure whether to feel more comfortable about the odds or not, but then the Caitian hardly expected to get too far in this tournament, but at least she would try her best.

She wasn’t sure what it was that made her decide to compete once Taylor told her where the Astadler was going, and that her choices were basically ‘enjoy it or not’. It’s not like she could be miffed at Taylor and do anything about it considering they were already on the way. Jackie still wondered how much he knew about her, and her ways; considering she could hardly pass up a challenge once offered one. Not with a side of her urging to relive her days prior to the Horizon and a chance to do something she enjoyed. Without Mark she had to spar with holograms aboard the Horizon. The tournament could take her skills out of the holodeck and onto the next level.

Looking around the area, she saw a number of Klingon milling about the place, mixing with Starfleet officers and civilians. Jackie felt a sense of…something she couldn’t really describe, but she didn’t really feel out of place with the Klingons. Not that much anyway.

She found the Klingons' ways of fighting very effective. And their ways definitely woke up the fighter and the predator in her every time she used the bat’leth. Even Mark mentioned the gleam she got in her eyes when she picked up the blade. Jackie never thought of herself as someone worthy of having real Klingon weapons in particular because the only experience she had with Klingons was the things she heard or read or saw in the holodeck; but the real experience is different when you're experiencing it as opposed to hearing about it or reading about it. And the holodeck, as much as it simulated reality, was still not reality in the end. She knew about rituals and ways they did some things, but Jackie knew she herself would need a lot more training and discipline in order to become skilful enough with a Klingon weapon to actually own the real thing and do it justice. Before that, she would have to start thinking like a Klingon.

The moment Dan Taylor mentioned the betleH tournament and specifically said she could either fight or attend something inside of Jackie Clawson had woken up; the fighter, the part that she briefly unleashed on Powell back on the Horizon, the part that let her remember how she was back before she took a command. With the recent changes in her career alone, the Caitian was lost and unsure what to do next. But she was here at the tournament, and she couldn’t really go back now.

Jackie blinked, slightly confused as the crowd around her erupted in a cheer as Duerkes finished his speech. The Caitian shook her head slightly and chided herself for zoning out like that as she watched a Klingon make his way to the podium and begin to speak.

Quote:
“You will win matches, you will lose matches.  But the test isn’t in that one match.  It is against yourself and your own ability to hold to your honor.  You may lose matches many times here, but only you can determine if you are defeated.  To be Klingon you must know your limits.  That is why we test ourselves.  To be Klingon you must overcome your limits.  That is why we test ourselves.  If you cannot fail, if there is no chance to lose, then what can winning mean?  We are here find our limits, to make each action improve ourselves, to be better now than we were a moment ago.  This is what it means to BE Klingon.”

Jackie blinked at each sentence said, the totlh didn’t seem like the typical Klingon, yet he was Klingon not just by the looks but by the character as well. She found herself nodding to what he said. She looked back at her own training; she focused on honing where she failed. Pushing herself harder each time she did something well.

‘Find your limit, then increase it’ where the words Mark Harmon used to sum it up.  To hear K’hare saying almost the same thing, just seemed eerie to the Caitian.  Jackie perked her ears up more as the Klingon continued.

Quote:
“There is test enough here for everyone.  Even those who are watching the matches can learn.  This is not simply a game, it, like everything is a test if you can hear the questions.  You are surrounded by the chance to learn new things.  This event is a target rich environment.  So watch and learn.  Be better when you leave here than when you arrived and you will have been victorious!  Qapla’!”

“Qapla’!” Jackie gave a curt nod in response even though very few probably heard her.  Not that the Caitian cared right now.  The Caitian failed to notice Taylor on the podium right away, she was too busy trying to keep a multitude of memories away and the look of off longing to be back where she was years ago off her face as the Klingon’s words rang in her mind in a re-play mode.

Somehow K’Hare’s words had managed to strike a chord within Jackie, not only that, at once Jackie felt a sense of déjà vu, only this time she was no longer a Lieutenant or a security officer or a pilot, she was a Rear Admiral, commanding a starship and a Task Force; somehow ending up at the betleH tournament.  Life threw funny things at one sometime.

Was this why Taylor was so ‘insistent’ she attend? To give her a chance to learn. So she could leave here better than when she arrived. How much did he know about her? Did he know she’d want to go the extra step and fight, despite the confusion she felt with the promotion and the Task Force command. Did he know that she…still lived for rushes like this? That she’d been fascinated by the Klingons and their ways for years after being on the receiving end of a Klingon blade, secretly keeping it to herself as she learned their ways of fighting; secretly longing to spend some time amongst them because she truly believed she could learn a lot from them that way.

She’s found new respect for their ways once she’s heard K’hare speak. It made so much sense now.

She felt a tap on the shoulder, bringing her out of her daze and taking in a short breath she turned just in time to hear the question.

"Jackie? What did you think of K'Hare's speech?"

Jackie cocked her head to the side as she recognized Dan Taylor.  Her ears flickered lightly at his voice as his words brought her back.

“'t was … ah…” she started, pausing as she realised her throat has gone dry, she cleared it before continuing. “..uh...brought back a few memories” she admitted. “woke up a few…things too” she spoke, still not really sure how to interpret the feelings and emotions and urges waking up inside her as the Klingon’s words sunk in deeper into her soul.

Dan laughed, still feeling the effects of the bloodwine earlier "Yeah, K'Hare is good at giving speaches. So you'll understand what I mean when I say, that was a weak one"

He winked "I'll have to tell him to work harder later"

"I need to try to introduce you to K'Hare and Wade, they are TFCO's themselves, 86 and 9 respectively. In fact, the Bolian Neirbo ran Task Force 44 so they may all be able to give you some advice"

"So what have you been up to today while I've been 'working'?" The way Dan said the word working indicated he didn't really believe this was a job, he was having too much fun for it to be.

Jackie smiled lightly.

"I'd like to meet them" she said. "K'Hare especially" she admitted.

Jackie smirked a bit as he asked her what she's been up to.

"Hanging out in bars, thinking about things.... surveying the situation. Looking around. Meeting new folks." she noted. "trying not to look too lost and befuddled. Trying to find something to do"  she admitted.

Dan shrugged "Sounds like a normal day for me, I think I've barely spent more than a few days in my office in total since I arrived here last October. I've either been out making visits or down on the Promenade."

"I have had a day of meeting dignitries, the judge K'Hare, the Judge Neirbo, even Rear Admiral Duerkes." He smiled once more "So it's been tough as I'm sure you can guess"

"Although I did have a strange morning" he spotted poQ as he spoke "Serenity apparently has a new Klingon Ambassador, he has given me my own blade. One from house Chang" As he spoke he wondered if Jackie would grasp the issues that raised in his mind.

As if reading his mind , the ambassador caught Dan's view and nodded to him in aknowledgement.

"How did you manage to get a blade from the house of Chang?" Jackie asked, curious. Suddenly feeling a lot more self consious, considering her own blade was nothing but a replicated version of the bat'leth. How was she expecting to get anywhere with it was beyond her for the moment.

"I'm not sure" Dan was still looking at poQ as he spoke "It would appear the Ambassador saw something in me he needed to fix" he didn't feel like elaborating much on what he had felt earlier, to be accused of embarressment stung him. It was painful because he had realised it was the truth.

He was embarressed of his blade and himself, it wasn't the way a warrior reacted. poQ had given him a new set of issues now he carried a Cheng blade. Explaining it to K'Hare would be difficult.

"You, like I, and many others are also here to learn, as K'Hare had said." She said. "Although I can imagine how many people would want to know where and how exactly did you get the blade." she paused looking around the area with Klingons and humanoids mixing about. "Sure he's likely to have created more issues for you, but..." she trailed off for a moment, "there's probably a good reason for all  that and the outcome will serve you better in the end"

For a moment, Jackie lost herself in her own thoughts once again, thinking about K'Hare's speech once again and what Taylor had just told her, then realised that Taylor had gone quiet too. She saw hints of what humans called embarrasment from him, rather felt them more in the silence that ensued between the two.

"Don't take it as a bad thing that the ambassador saw something in you that he needed to fix..." she cocked her head to the side and smiled lightly.  "We all have something we need fixing, sometimes those things aren't seen by us but are seen by others." Jackie noted. "isn't it part of the reason you brought me here? " she asked.

[ON - Welcoming Ceremony]

Lionel didn't show up for the long-winded speeches, nor the company of the other competitors. He found the first speech full of sentimentality that my stir the heart of the average officer, but not Lionel. Nothing stirred his heart unless it was into a cold rage when he thought of Jor - that never really disappeared. The Klingon's speech Lionel decided would be worth something to those that failed at what they did. Being in the profession he had been, if you failed, you died. He considered, that death was the ultimate failure. Perhaps his words held some amount of wisdom.

It wasn't until the Judges started to move off stage that Beckett recognised his contact among their number. He was wearing a Starfleet uniform - atypical of somebody that was as deep in Intelligence as the person needed to brief Beckett, but there may have been all kinds of intricate cover stories.

"So he's somebody important for this competition." Beckett pursed his lips and continued thinking. It would be difficult to catch him in a quiet place where such matters would be appropriate. Somebody was handing out PADD's to the competitors in the crowd, Lionel took one and reviewed his first round match up and the time before looking for his contact again. He had no name and no other information about him, this man probably knew everything there was to know about Beckett, at least from his Starfleet file which thankfully, didn't cover the last eight or nine months. That put him at an advantage to Beckett who most definitely didn't like being at a disadvantage... to anyone.

He spotted the contact slipping off the podium and into a conversation with a Catian in a Starfleet uniform. Beckett slipped into a more comfortable position where he could keep his eye on the human before approaching him. Beckett needed some kind of hold over this man, something useful that could be used in a conversation.

He stayed silently in the corner, straining to hear their conversation above the gentle murmur of the crowd.

[OFF]

Beckett is coming for yoooooooooou! :D No tags unless somebody feels like spotting him, Beckett likes to watch.

"That depends" Dan lapsed in to silence again, he felt uncomfortable it took him a few moments to realise it wasn't because of the words poQ had said to him it was that tingle he felt when someone was watching him. A few cursiory glances revealed no one of interest to him, instead of dwelling on the thoughts he turned his attention back to Jackie.

"poQ may have told me something unpalatable, something I thought I had resolved long ago" He forced a smile to his face "obviously I didn't solve it."

Over Jackie's shoulder he noticed Vice Admiral Jefferson looking in his direction, 'thats one mystery solved' he said to himself.

"Do you have any plans for dinner tonight?" Dan asked as he looked away from John "I appear to be at a loose end currently"

Jackie watched as he lapsed into silence, her eyes narrow.

"Suppose we all have those...demons that we think have been dealt with, but they come back to haunt us yet again" she commended trying to keep her tone level as the events of the last few weeks cme back to her mind full blast.

Jackie blinked lightly as Taylor asked  if she had plans for  dinner that night, she hadn't thought that far ahead throughout the day.

"Ah.. no..." she said. "I haven't really thought about that" she admitted.  "Been getting acquanted with a few people and the station" she said. Out of the corner of her eyes she noticed toreQ stumbling around, she allowed herself a small smile, recalling the moments she spent with the Klingon in the bar and their walk to his quarters in his drunken state. Clearly the Klingon wasn't fully recovered from his drinking incident, but she could see he didn't really care much.

ON:

Jackie raised an eyebrow at how upfront Taylor seemed, yet again leaving her with little choice. First the promotion and the Task Force command, then catnapping her to the tournament and giving her little choice, now this. But she could hardly argue or fight it. Besides it's not like she minded *too* much about this sort of thing, not at the end anyway.  She could hardly say that coming to the tournament was a huge mistake.

Although she might've spoken too soon on that. Something inside the Caitian felt that Taylor was right, even if the way he made her do things seemed rather...unique. He seemed similar to Mark in some ways, Jackie recalled how harmon had literaly picked her up from her duty station aboard the Rayden and carried her off the bridge to make her get some much needed rest after she refused to leave the security station.

Jackie was about to reply with a somewhat sarcastic remark, but decided against it, reminding herself that protesting will likely be useless, considering she learned that aboard the Astadler. Besides not like she had anything better to do. "Allright....it'll be my  pleasure" she said, allowing herself a smile.

She followed his eyes also glancing around.

"I've only met two of the contestants." she said. "toreQ and Major T'Shir." she mrred T'Shir's name in what appeared to be slight displeasure.  "toreQ and I spent sometime at one of the bars indulging in bloodwine and..." she trailed off trying to remember the name of the drink the Klingon introduced her to. " chuch'tlutlh" she said the name with a strong hint of a Caitian accent. "though he seems allergic to me, but toreQ didn't seem to mind that any less" she noted with a slight smile as she recalled how the two had 'met' shortly before they started 'chatting'.

Jackie shrugged at his question on her preference for a meal.

"Oh? I have a choice in that, then?" she asked, giving Taylor a light smile. "I don't really mind, I think after the events of the last few weeks, I'm keeping an open mind to a lot of things" she said.
