Some Holodeck Time
Feb 9th, 2006, 1:14pm

“Reunion between comrades”
Day 0
Time: 1430 hours

Rear Admiral Rolf Emerson wanted to get some much needed practice in before the opening round of the tournament began.  He had reserved a holosuit from a local business man for a few hours.  He had never fought in the Bet’leth tournament before, so naturally he feared what he was in for.  For the first two hours, Rolf called up archived footage of the fight, carefully studying each match.  With that completed, Rolf was now aware of the tactics and skills that it would take to win.

“Computer.” The charismatic young man began.

The familiar and boring beep was herd indicating that the computer was ready for instruction.

“Begin training scenario, Klingon Warrior practice match.” Rolf said.

[“SELECT DIFFICULTY LEVEL”] replied the voice of the computer

“Computer, what is the highest difficulty level this program can generate based on the data collected the past 3 tournaments?”

After a few minuets, the computer replied, [“BASED ON PAST TOURNAMENT PARTIPANTS, STATICAL PROABILITIES, THIS PROGRAM CAN GENERATE A DIFFICULTY LEVEL RANGING FROM ONE TO TEN”]

Rolf allowed himself a few moments to think about what the computer had told him.  He figured that the first round would not be easy, so he made his decision.

“Computer, set difficulty level at level five.” He ordered

[“AFFIRMATIVE, DIFFICULTY LEVEL SET AT LEVEL FIVE”] replied the computer.

For the first two hours of the practice match, Rolf didn’t do so well.  Although he was an expert with the weapon he had trained with since he was 16 years old, he found that the Klingon warrior was way stronger than he had anticipated.  So if he was going to defeat his challenger in the first round, he would need skill and a lot of fancy foot work.  So he ordered the computer to increase the difficulty level to level six.

This time he knew what to expect, it seems a lot of combatants like to throw their weight into the fight. Rolf deduced that the only way to achieve victory was to make his opponent angry by forcing him to make mistakes that he would take advantage of.  After another half an hour of engaging his adversary using a series of moves he learned from the Shadow Master academy back home, he was starting to get a feel for how the tournament had worked.  Unknown to Rear Admiral Emerson, a very important person who had made an impact on his life had entered to observe him fight; this person was Vice Admiral John Jefferson, his old task Force CO.

By the time the officer had found a nice little area to observe, Rolf was already working up a sweat.  The Klingon he was fighting was very fit and muscular.  He used the standard Bet’leth which was a strong weapon.  Rolf had observed and then fought several rounds earlier and was starting to turn the tide of the match in his favor.  Rolf started using short punches to the face in an attempt to trip the Klingon up and catch him off balance.  It worked, maybe a little too well.  The Klingon got very angry and wasn’t watching what he was doing, using his upper body strength; Rolf jumped over the Klingon’s head and attacked the Klingon’s Bet’leth.  The force of the blow made the warrior drop his weapon.  Rolf quickly countered by using his left arm, delivering blow after blow and eventually round house kicked him to the ground.  The Klingon fell over with a surprised look on his face.

“Submit and admit defeat.”

The Klingon just lied flat on his back, speechless that he was beaten by a non Klingon.

“SUBMIT. Do the honorable thing.” Rolf added

“I yield to you, well fought sir.” The holographic Klingon replied.

“Computer, pause program and reset.”

Rolf turned around and couldn’t believe who he was looking at, “Admiral.” He stood at attention despite the fact he had sweat pouring from his face.

"Your technique is off Rolf" Said John as he watched from his place against with a faint look of distain on his face, how he could make such a judgement was entirely unknown. No one on the station could ever say they've seen him take any interest in betleH sparing, his own injuries made taking part hard for him, something that appeared to make him bitter.

"Fight like a Klingon, it's a Klingon weapon." He uncrossed his arms and stepped forward "Merging your own style in to your betleH technique is okay, once you've got the betleH technique down to pat"

"May I?" He took Rolf's blade from his hands and heafted it, the first thing he noticed was the weight, the blade had a different balance to his own he took a few experminental swipes to gauge the correct way to explain it.

"You see, your treating the blade as a weapon" John swung the weapon as he spoke, moving it around as you would during sparing "the Klingon philosophy is different" he smiled "at least from my untutored mind"

"For a Klingon warrior the weapon is his own body, the betleH is merely an extension of this" John tried to show what he meant buy attacking the now immobile Klingon, using the blade as an extension of his own arm rather than as a tool in his hand"

"Do you understand what I'm trying to say?" John offered the blade back "You fill find yourself judged here by the Klingons in the crowed on your fighting style and honour. At least showing you have made an attempt to understand their" he paused and smiled "art means they wont treat you too badly"

After watching his old Task Force commander handles the blade with precision, Rolf was impressed.

“A very effective display sir.” He added as the Vice Admiral handed the blade back to him.  “It seems my holodeck time has expired for NOW. I’ve got some time late this evening, I’ll be sure to put your advice to good use.”  Rolf added

“Computer, program complete, save.”

The famous holodeck grid appeared and the two exited.

“If you’re not to busy, can I buy you a cup of coffee? Truth is sir, you’re the first familiar and friendly face I’ve seen in months and I’ve got a lot to get off my chest. That is if you’re up to listening to me spill my guts about what has happened to me and my crew over the past month or so.”

Ooc: Dan if you’re ok with this, he wants to get some advice on one of our past missions. A lot of the decisions he will make will be based on the advice you give him if your ok with it.

OFF:

I should go back and count but I think less than half of the fighters in the tourney have been Klingon... so if Rolf continues this, he should be surprised to face a blue human or a a romulan or something when he goes to 7 or 8.  And the style would be some twist on Klingon moves.

Also, the highest level would most likely be a clone of ta'pez as he has won 2 and placed in one.

Just some thoughts for continuing this.
