How droll

John kept his face impassive as he watched Taylor leave the podium, that man just didn't know how to act. To think Starfleet made him a flag officer, or worse an Intelligence Specialist, someone even John couldn't order about.
 
It made him wince with pain.
 
The speech made by Duerkes and that Klingon K'Hare wasn't much better, betleH was nothing but a chance for people from around the Federation to scream 'look at me look at me' it sickend and sadended him. To his left he could see Lieutenant Chadwick doing his job as a Starfleet Officer should. He wasn't mingling with the crowed, wasn't bringing in strays from other Task Force's and he certainly wasn't being over friendly with the Judges.
 
Unbidden a smile grew on his face, the rage subsided to a low simmering bubble it was replaced by a warm mellow feeling that could only be received from a the thought of a well thought out plan executing.
 
A single thought moved through his head 'Enjoy your time now Taylor, everything changes for you soon enough'  with it the smile on his face turned in to a grin that could easily be mistaken for one on the face of many people in the arena.
 
If only they knew what he did.

"Excuse me, sir, are those seats taken?"  Bettina looked down at the man as she shuffled into the seats, suddenly realizing he was a Vice Admiral.  "Sir, I'm sorry!  Uh..I was just looking for a couple seats together and..."  Shrugging, she waited for a reply...although she was not in uniform, she still held to protocol...

John turned to face the sound of the voice "No they are free" he was unusally jolly, the thoughts of his impending victory had momentarily raised his spirts. Even a foolish young lady couldn't knock him from his perch.
 
"You only seem to need one seat though, are you expecting someone else?"

"Well, yes, someone was supposed to meet me here, but I haven't seen him yet..."  She shrugged and sighed.  "We only just met, though, so he may have changed his mind, and I really don't want to miss any of this..."  Settling into a seat, she looked down at the stage.  "I've never been to one of these before, and I'm finding it...fascinating.  I did like what I heard of the speeches, though, about doing your best..."  Thinking back to the challenges she had faced, she was able to be satisfied in knowing that she had done her best, even if it had been inadequate at the time.  Still, it had been that effort that had kept Kull Wolfgar from killing her outright, so there was something to be said for it!

Bryan saw her sitting down next to someone he had hoped to avoid.Admiral Jefferson his most direct superior.Adjusting his uniform bryan made his way over to where Bettina and jefferson were sitting.
 
"Well, yes, someone was supposed to meet me here, but I haven't seen him yet..."  She shrugged and sighed.  "We only just met, though, so he may have changed his mind, and I really don't want to miss any of this..."  Settling into a seat, she looked down at the stage.  "I've never been to one of these before, and I'm finding it...fascinating.  I did like what I heard of the speeches, though, about doing your best..."
 
Bryan slowly approached the two ,Bettina seemed lost in thought and jefferson seemed equally preoccupied as she did.Bryan spoke up.before he sat.
 
Sorry im late i had to go change back into my uniform.I hope you didnt think i had forgotten you.
 
Bryan smiled as bettina turned and looked up at him.

John suppressed the urge to grunt, love birds had taken nest next to him. How could a man sit there and hate someone properly when there were two idiots cooing over each other to the right of him.
 
With hindsight he should have stayed on the podium rather than moving down to keep a better eye on Taylor.
 
Still he would have to put up with it.
 
Looking once again at the couple he put two and two together "Captain Cash?"

Bryan stiffened at the formal tone of the question.He hadn't wanted to meet with jefferson so soon.
Bettina held his arm tightly and began to squeeze it gently as she sensed his tension.
 
Yes sir Admiral.I'm sorry we've had to meet so informally i had hoped to visit you later in the day tomorrow when there would be more time.

Looking at Cash John noticed something in the man's eyes, some cold hard taint that vanished as he turned to look at Bettina once more. Something about the look in the mans eyes made John want to get to know him better, a small voice inside his head told him that Captain Cash could be useful in future enterprises.
 
From experience John knew the importance of taking the approach slowly, there would be no use in going heavy handed and scaring the upstanding CO off.
 
"Oh please, no need to be so formal" he smiled as he spoke "Please call me John, it's not like this is an official function."

Bettina watched the exchange, a little curious at the dynamics.  Of course, she hadn't always gotten along with her CO's.  It had just been circumstance, with Admiral Emerson collapsing at his son's birthday and Bettina ending up in charge of his care, as well as the mayor's, that she had formed a friendship with her superiors.  It was far better than the animosity she had gotten from some CO's.  But then the Vice Admiral softened.
 
"Hello, sir."  Bettina grinned as she looked down at him.  "John...I'm Bettina."  She held out a hand to shake.  "DS7, under Admiral Emerson."  Then she turned to Bryan and murmured quietly, "Oh, I never doubted."  She wriggled her eyebrows at Cash, but didn't do more.  It would be his choice how much of their relationship he wanted to make public...

Bryan smiled and held bettina's hand in his own.The warmth of her hand felt nice on his. Soothing calming.Bryan suddenly realized he was staring into bettina's eyes again.Admiral jefferson just looked at cash and smiled.
 
Yes im sorry admir.....i mean John you can call me Bryan i was supprised you recognized me.Well i guess not , lots of people do considering the circumstances of my career.

"Quite" said John politely Cash's history didn't actually interest him in the slighest, but saying that would probably rub Cash the wrong way.
 
"I wonder if I could have a few minutes of your time after dinner tonight? In my office? I have a few fleet related questions I think it would be good to get sorted out sooner rather than later."
 
He smiled with all the warmth of a Crocodile before it eats you "It's so much mroe personal face to face than over sub space"

Bryan smiled.Jefferson was an odd one he reminded bryan of someone else he knew.Always playing the game and having the entire deck stacked in his favor in one way or another.
 
Yes sir I can stop by your office later tonight after dinner.I'd like the chance to ask you a few questions about something as well.
 
That reminded bryan of something he was going to ask Bettina.
 
Speaking of that!
 
Bryan turned his head toward bettina.
 
 
Would you like to join me later ummm  i ahh .That is i mean after my qualifying match for dinner?If im not to beat up for you?

Bryan started to laugh at the face bettina was making then tried to stop himself as he remember his boss was sitting right next to them.
 
Ahhehm!  ah yes your favor M'lady! i shall not remove it untill my time in the tournament is completed.
 
Bryan started to turn red as he saw admiral jefferson looking at him with an eyebrow raised bryan wasn't sure what the admiral thought of him by now and quite frankly he didnt really care any more.He was happy and free and with someone special who made him feel alive again.He brought bettina's hand to his mouth and kissed it gently.

John tried his best to ignore Cash as he spoke to Bettina, romance had always seemed a waste of time for him. Life and his career was all that had mattered, Jennifer had only gotten in the way when she was around and after she left John found himself feeling nothing.
 
Sure people had tried to engage him in a romantic manner during his life, but he had never wanted to appear as Captain Cash appeared at this instant.
 
If he was really honest, it turned his stomach.
