Keeping out of the spotlight
Feb 11th, 2006, 8:57pm

Mike stayed in the back like several others, watching and listening to the speech.  He was glad someone else was in that spotlight other then him. As he sipped his raktijno, he looked around at other people in the room. Several he knew, several others he didn't. Rear Admiral Duerkes was one he knew for sure. He was proud of how Wade had made a name for himself in the Fleet.

As Mike took another sip, he also wondered who would be facing who in the first round. Sure, there was pleny of time to prepare, but he was also sure everyone else was wondering the same thing.

As the speech continued, Mike decided instead of staying in the back and just keeping out of the way, he'd make the effort to get to know people he didn't already, and be sure to speak to those he did. It was time to change the opinion some people had about him because of the position he'd held for so long.

Finishing the raktajino, he turned to the person beside him, "I'm Captain Bremer, nice to meet you."

Blair blinked as the officer beside him turned and introduced himself as Captain Bremer. What are the odds... "It's a pleasure to meet you again, sir. I don't know if you remember me, but I served for a short time on the Pegasus-B as your Marine CO as a Captain. Christopher Blair..." He trailed off, giving Bremer a moment to search his memory.

"Of course I remember you Mr. Blair" Mike said, realizing he'd looked all around the room for people he knew, but not at the ones standing closest to him.

"If I remember correctly, you transfered to the USS Cobra, before going to DS7", hoping he was right. There had been so many people aboard the Pegasus over the years that had moved on to other ships and stations within Starfleet. "Are you fighting this year?" Mike asked, glad he had ran into an old friend.

ON

Rolf already spotted his Marine XO chatting with Bremer.  For the Rear Admiral himself, he wanted to chat with Mike.  It was Bremer after all that got him on the fast track to the Admiralty.

“Excuse me Chris. I’d like to say hello to you sir.”

Rolf called Bremer sir out of respect. While Bremer is a Captain, to Rolf he was still the Fleet Admiral and he respected Bremer.

“What’s this I here about you taking a Starbase command?” Rolf allowed himself to laugh a little.  The first laugh that any of his crew seen out of him in weeks. “First I go for a planetary command and now it seems everyone wants a planetary command.” Rolf replied

OFF: Actually, Rolf, at the time this takes place in the DS7 mission lineup, I'm still assigned to the SBG, not as MXO. Just FYI. Wink

ON:
Blair grinned a bit at Bremer. "Actually, sir, it was the Montgomery. Turns out they needed someone to help organize their Marine detatchment - she'd just been commissioned, as it turned out. So that was more TDY. But yeah, then I did end up at DS7."

Blair turned as Rolf came over and entered the conversation. He kicked himself that he hadn't pushed for reassignment back onto the ground on Atlantis and had settled for the Strategic Operations slot in the DS7 Second Battle Group, but there really was nothing to be done about it now, beyond keeping a transfer request on file.

Blair nodded when Rolf finished. "Yeah, I heard about that, and that you got demoted to Captian, but I never got the straight of it. What really happened, if you don't mind my asking, sir?"

Mike smiled at the comment. "Yes, you made us all want a base huh?"

There was something about life on a starbase that was appealing, but Mike did miss going places...

"You've done very well with DS7 Rolf, I'm sure the staff is proud of you as well." Mike paused for a moment to change the subject, "Ready for the first round, sir?"

The laughter stopped.  Rolf got into his serious and professional tone.

“Yea well, command of DS7 can be very stressful. Everyone thinks we got it made on Atlantis. We actually don’t.  Believe it or not, there are some days where I miss being on the bridge of a starship. At least when your on a starship, the entire galaxy is not watching your every move and questioning every decision you make.”

He smiled. “I envy you Captain.” Rolf stood back. “Captain, it feels weird calling you Captain. From the moment I met you five years ago, you intimidated the hell out of me. You still do.” Rolf said

“Now….now I know what it must have been like for you.  When you have a chance Captain, I’d like to buy you dinner before the tournament is over.”
