Thoughts of Hunter
Feb 12th, 2006, 1:44pm

Hunter watched with interest as K’Hare made exactly the sort of speech he expected. Though of course the Klingon had warned him on their first meeting to expect the unexpected, so Hunter’s expectation was of something not to be expected, which was exactly what the CO gave for those who weren’t expecting it. Hunter though, still wasn’t sure about K’Hare, having seen him both as a mad drunk and dutiful officer. For all his different faces though, he seemed to hold a very firm belief of what was and what was not correct for an officer, a warrior and a Klingon, so it didn’t seem out of character for him to give such a speech as opposed to, “it’s the taking part that counts.” This was a bat’leth tournament after all.

The opening ceremony itself was hardly Federation Day in its scale, but the quietly rumbling atmosphere was charged, and Hunter was glad he had brought no friends along with him, not that he had found time to make many on the Klingon base. Just as unconscious actions like writing became harder when he knew someone was watching, so did an organic, instinct-based activity like fighting. Having someone close, cheering at the side of the arena was simply a distraction and a bit of support wasn’t worth the hassle.

It seemed the same was true only for a few of the other competitors he’d seen since arriving. Many walked round in groups, with supporters following in their wake offering encouragement. Hunter had never been one to shy away from the limelight when he had done something, but before and during such a period as this was a time for solitary thinking, if not company. If you couldn’t find strength within yourself, you weren’t much of a competitor. Groupies were for losers.

As the crowd dispersed, some moving to inspect the Wall of Honour (already holding Hunter’s blade), some trying to get their faces on the newscast and others making for their rooms or the dinner table, Hunter decided to make for the pilot’s bar he had heard of. He had no intention of getting drunk before his first fight, but it would be good to soak up some ego-laden atmosphere tonight. He wouldn’t be able to sleep until early in the morning, and if anyone knew how to pass the time it was pilots.
